"Doc" Cook figures on a dozen shots every week. He brings a dozen flash bulbs and a it-exposure film pack and then at tempts to pick out the 12 most exciting, most sensational mo ments of the two-hour or so pro gram to record for all time. "Doc" faces a tough job to , night. He won't know whether or not to go the limit on the open ing bout between Frankie Mur dock and Gorilla Pogi, which every indication points to as one of the closest and hardest-fought battles of. the season, or whether to hold off until later in the eve ning when Indian Frankie Clem-I ens and Glen Stone, the former "Billy Newman," are scheduled to fall to in a n ot h e r cleanie meanie affair which is almost cer tain to be a spectacular event and may produce some standout sur prise developments. One thing "Doe' Cook is sure - of. He is going to save a big num ber of his bulbs and films for the final event, the long-heralded and long-awaited "battle of the cen tury" involving Pete Belcastro and Les Wolfe, because it is ap parent to him, as it is to the bun drdds of other wrestling fans who have a Ir ea d y reserved camp chairs in the Main and Spring street torture tabernacle, t 114a t this particular tussle is going to end in nothing less than man slaughter and probably in no less than outright murder. The mangle of the millenium, among other things, will un questionably be accompanied by a total transformation in the person of La Belle Belcastro. ' ' This bloke, as 'you ar welt - aware, is a blacliguard of the first water. He dotes on may . hem and would rather kick his great-grandma than eat. Not withstanding, the' Belcastro is a likeable villain, and occasionally, when he Is up against a knave of sterner hue, he becomes a highly-acclaimed hero. That unquestionably will be the situation tonight, for the Beleastro's opponent is a guy so MeV so sullenly meanthat the cash customers, as one man, are bound to side with anyone who lines up against him and to cheer wildly anyone who might defeat him. Thus the Belcastro. apparently standing a better chance of maul ing Wolfe than any of the other wrestlers who have been thrown in against the Texan during re cent weeks, becomes a regenerat ed rascal without the necessity of forfeiting any of his regener acy. But that doesn't mean that , Belcastro will humble the Texan. No, sir, far from it. Three games, one victory. five touchdowns and no extra points. That's the Klamath Pelicans' football record to date this sea son. In every respect but one the record is improvingim proving so rapidly and notably that already t her e. is talk. crazy talk, about going through the rest of the schedule unde feated. winning the conference championship and such stuff. The Klamath outfit fumbled and stumbled through its first game and lost to DIIIISMIlir, 12-6. Then it ploughed up and down the field at The Dalles but still couldn't regis ter the yards when yardage counted. The result was an other defeat, 7-6. Last Friday night at Grants Pass the Pelicans finally broke into the win column and did it In such a manner as to leave no doubt as to their power and to give more than a hint of skill. The score was 18-0, and the local rooters immedi ately set up the "on our way" cry. Maybe the optimists are right. Everybody hopes so. anyhow. But just the same It's going to be a pretty tough grind from here on out, and In the meantime, how about those points after touchdown? Inability to convert is a heavy handicap. It means that a team always has to be at least one touchdown better in order not to lose. The situation has already been amply demonstrated in the case of the Pelicans. Their Dunamuir defeat was a defeat in any case, and their Grants Pass victory was a victory re gardless, but sandwiched in be tween was that loss which might just as well have been a tiethe 7-6 The Dalles af fair. Ashland has had almost as much trouble as Klamath at adding the extra point, and if either team manages to break through its crossbar jinx Fri day, that team may well be the victor. Then there's Medford. The Pearpickers are at least 50 per cent proficient as they demonstrated with a six-touchdown, 39-7 romp over Rose burg last week, and a 13-14 loss to Hood River the week before. And Pendleton, which (note the score) beat Baker Friday night. 7-6. And Bend. There are, of course, three different ways of making points after touchdown, by kicking, running and passing. What amounts to a blood feud will have its inaugural Friday night w h en Skeet O'Connell brings his Grizzlies over from Ashland to play the Pelicans here in the second conference encounter for both teams. O'Connell of Ashland and Snowy Gustafson and Buck , Hammer, the Klamath topmen. were all teammates at Oregon State college five years or so ago, and now their respective outfits are scheduled to col lide. The "inside Information" is that O'Connell. after scouting the Ounsmuir tangle, carried word back to Ashland that the Pelicans looked like "a lousy bunch of apes." The Pelicans have come a long way since then, but the Ash binders have made com parative advances since their early season defeat by Weed, so that neither coach will know just what to expect next Friday. The world series is over; the Yankees have been hailed as baseball history's greatest team and, simultaneously, a detriment to both major leagues because of their over whelming superiority; t h e world champs have pocketed something over $6000 apiece; the losing Giants have found some solace in their $4000 odd individual cuts. and the na tional pastime has finally' passed into its brief annual period of hibernation. A backward glance indicates that the Yanks, for their sea son's efforts, drew just about one-third more in wages than the Giants. This fact is offered without thought of drawing conclusions, although at least two are pos sible: (1) that the more money you pay, the better team you get; and (2) money, doesn't mean everything because the 'Giants, won their league pen nant even though their aggre gate pay amounted to less. not only than that drawn by the Yanks, but also that hand ed out to the Chicago Cubs and one or two other cillbs in both leagues.
