At I ,1 r' ' PAGE STE'rEEN ISLE RESIDENT .:THINKS BIROS 1: DROPPED FISH to Birds dropped the young fish found on roofs and the ground at ,Algoma last week, in the opinion t of LaCele Wynne, who has long :lived on Wilson island in Link ' ,river. ! In a letter to The Herald and ;News. the Wilson island resident ,gives an interesting theory on the 'Algoma incident. Here is the let ter: Klamath Falls, Oregon. To the Editor: . I note your news item about the fish at Algoma and I do not consider it phenomenal at all. I have lived on Wilson Island 'about twenty years and I have ; seen many extraordinary things -happen in bird-lifethings that any film producer would have paid thousand. of dollars to get. But alas! those wild life scenes ,are difficult to catch, unlees one :happens to be "Johnny-on-theapot." '' Years ago, before Copco built , the dam and big pipe, the water ,around this island was 9 feet deep in most places and there were thousands of birds.--mostly Gulls and White Pelicans, that :soared over the stream, especially at early dawn. Sometimes a .strong south wind would hold the 'water back to the upper lake, leaving the river bed nearly dry (except for pools) and hundreds of birdsGulls, Pelicans, King :Fishers, etc.would soar and swoop down for fish. The Gulls took the small fish and King 'Fishers and Pelicans carried :away big ones. I've seen Pelicans . carry fish longer than their own body. One day, just for the thrill of it, I ran out to the rives and 'caught a Pelican by the leg just as he was rising from the river :vrith a large fish. He dropped the .fish and fought a gallant battle, 'almost lifting me off my feet be :Ore I let him go. t Great flocks of those birds :would almost darken the sun, many of them carrying fishes. If . the leader got frightened, he :would drop his fish and if they all got frightened they would .drop 'their fish. :: Link river used to be a good fishing stream, as any old-time isherman could tell you and no :doubt they would remember how ithe birds used to carry and drop fish. Boys sometimes gathered ' the minnows and sold them for : bait. The birds kept me busy at .times throwing fish back into the 'river, because I did not want my :Chickens to eat too much fish and spoil the flavor of eggs. Also I feared my two Chesapeake Bay dogs would get poisoned on taint ed fish. Of course our own com mon sense (if we have any) will tell us that fish can't really be ,rained from the skyfish are hatched from fish-eggs, so how A Picture of You if you h start to SAVE Nowt This Association (11 Offers a Higher Interest Rate Plus Guarantead Sat.tY (1717irdeenntd) MOO Starts Your Account First Federal Savings and Loan Association OF KLAMATH PALLS 111 No. 9th St. Phone 276 .., Member of Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corp. 7 LOW FARES EAST THROUGH FALL AND WINTER In effect October IS with the same econ omy as in summer for all classes of faresStandard or Tourist sleeping car or Coach -- on the luxurious, smooth. riding Empire Builder.
