Waterfront Teems With Rival Teamsters, Dockmen
Commerce has received a severe setback at San Francisco over the refusal of AFL union teamsters to haul
cargo handled by the CIO longshoremen and warehousemen. But there are plenty of people on the waterfront,
with teamsters picketing, long, shoremen running an open-air hiring hall, and both sides explaining their stands
over portable public address systems.
I. 0.0. F. Leader s Roosevelts Gay on Coast Trip
1
' With the gay smile and the jaunty greeting that seemed quite un
dimmed by a long and disappointing Congressional session or the
, Black incident, the President. with Mrs. Roosevelt, sprinkled his
west coast tour with platform appearances like this one. Apparently
bent on getting the maximum relaxation out of the trip. both laughed
and waved cheery greetings trom the rear platform of the Kest-
, donna special train.
Why Mr. Roosevelt, HON4 Could You?
""""'"Eurogr:an 411115.21C""1-11-""'"111
Before he donned grease-paint and costume for a night of fun
malcing on Broadway, American Legionnaire Billy Van of Provi
dence. R. 1., startled crowds with his close facial resemblance to
President Roosevelt. You can tell he isn't the man from the White
House by this picture. A President can't afford to doff dignity even
long enough to enjoy a hug from such a charmer as Madeleine Sell
wood in the privacy of the cabaret dressing room.

CIVILIZATION STEPS BACKWARD as war strides ahead. This was the scene of
utter desolation left by a series of Japanese bombing raids on the Nantao "MUMS" of Shanghai. Half
; clothed, forlorn, appearing like prehistoric cave men, these Chinese have built themselves a crude
shelter amid the ruins. Charred timbers show evidence of the fire which followed the aerial attacks.
