Victory on Sunday Gives
Californians League
Championship.
Ability to come through with
timely bingles with men on bases
was the big factor that gave the
III. Shasta Athletic Club an 8-6
victory over the Klamath Falls
Red Sox Sunday afternoon in the
California city before a 1000 fans.
The win for Shasta crowned the
team 1937 champion of the Non t h
ero California league after five
months of stiff competition.
The game. a free-hitting affair.
sparkled with heavy slugging by
both teams and sensational field
plays that brought the big crowd
to its feet time and time again.
Idt. Shasta, first at bat, lost no
time in going to work on the
slants of Clyde Carlstrom,
Sox hurler, nicking him for three
hinnies to score two runs in the
opening frame.
Klamath came back in the sec
ond canto to duplicate matters by
touching Joyce for three safeties
and tieing up the score 2-2. The
third frame was uneventful.
Shasta made a big inning of
the fourth, pounding Carlstrom
for three blows and parading over
home plate as many times to take
a 5-2 lead in the fray. Klamath's
part of the fourth netted them
two hits and one run. the,' inning
ending 5-3 in favor of the Cali
fornians. Both hurlers settled down to
superb chucking in the fifth and
sixth frames with neither team
scoring, but in the seventh ses

three runs to take a comfortably
lead of 8-3.
Failing to do any damage la
the seventh, the Red Sox opened
up with an eighth inning rally
that saw them hit Joyce for three
base knocks and score three times,
bringing the count Co 8-6 for
Shasta.
Both teams tightened down to
the final frame. neither secur
ing a hit or run to change the
score.
Larry Granger, Red Sox catch
er, led his team in slugging for
the afternoon, nicking Joyce for
three blows in three times at bat.
including a double. Carlstront
with a double and a single and
Wheeler with two singles also had
a good day at bat.
Chorak, University of Califor
nia player. led the Mt. Shasta
outfit in hitting, collecting three
for five off the slants of Carl
strom, Red Sox pitcher. Bob
Joyce and Crispi also found Klam
ath hurling to their liking. each
slamming out two base knocks
during the afternoon.
Chorak for Shasta and Dur
Reba for Klamath both turned in
fine defensive games.
The official scorers book show
ed Carlstrom allowing 13 safeties
with Joyce giving up 12, the
former striking out three and the
latter 6.
The game Sunday practically
closes the season for the Sox,
although contests with the Bend
Elks, State League winners. and
the Medford Rogttes may be
scheduled soon, to be played era
of Klamath Falls, no diamond
being available locally.
In 25 games played during the
1937 season, the Red Sox lost
but eight contests including the
loss to the San Francisco Seals.

the Giants have the National
league pennant tucked away in
their weskit pocket. but there's
still the bare chance that those
big bad Bees from Boston will
knock them over the head and
take the title right away from
them.
In fact, the last hope for the
Cubs, who now trail Bill Terry's
Terriers by fcTur games, lies in
the ability of the Baffling Bees
to continue their jinx over the
galloping Giants in two double
headers at the Polo grounds
Monday and Tuesday.
It will take a sweep of the
four-game set, or close to it, to
keep the Giants away from suc
cessful defense of their crown
through this last week of the
season. And even that may not
do it. unless the Cubs can knock
off the Cardinals and Cincinnati
Reds in their seven remaining
games.
As matters now stand. any
combination of sixsix wins for
the Giants, six losses for the
Cubs, or a sum making up that
totalclinches the pennant for
the New Yorkers. They have 11
games to play, to the Cubs'
seven.
It's strictly up to the Bees
now. They've already whipped
the Giants 10 times in 18 starts
this year. After they leave the
