HOSTESS HAS PLEASANT BUT ACTIVE DAIS By ILENE 11014' Host 1104, Demonstration Home MI week long they've been tioming to look over our lovely Demonstration Home, and I've had a wonderful time meeting tile eitizna of the Klamath Empire. And I've been pleasantly sur prised et the large number of these visitorm who are actually in terested in building a home or re modeling the one they now have. You'd be aurpriseri at the ques tions they ask me. too. For instance. one of the ladies wanted to know where she could keep 500 quart', of fruit she bad canned this summer. I had a quick answer for that one. Down in the space that is generally wasted, underneath the sink, is a large, roomy compatt ment. 'shelved with Klamath knotty pine. that is ideal as a place for keeping canned fruit. And another question that I have been asked is whether there Is any inconvenience in the fact that our house doesn't have a basement. My answer to that, emphatic ally' is "No," because we have all the things that a basement gener ally has. right on our ground floor, handy and convenient. Our oil heater with a gravity air flow is only a step from the kitchen and I can adjust it without traip sing ckar up and down those old basement stairs. The washing machine and sta tionary trays are on th e same floor so that I don't have to run up and downstairs every time the telephone rings or the baby cries. In fact, I much prefer the idea of washing easy and often. didn't know bow I would like this job of being hostess at the Demonstration Home but it cer tainly has been a pleasure. The people who have come to look at the house have been so nice and friendly, it was just like having 2rIto RE 0 ME mtnfliEln Residential Construction Has Sharp Upturn By E. S. DUFFIELD In Vail Street Journal) WASHINGTON A sharp up turn in residential construction In half a dozen large population centers this month, which may foretell the end of the recent slump in building, is disclosed by a special telegraphic survey made by Stewart MacDonald, federal housing administrator. Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Miami and Los An geles offices of the FHA reported early September gains in building activity ranging as high as 21)0 per cent above the August lull, ac cording to the survey which was made public yesterday, In these centers, particularly in the first four, activity in the first 10 da5s of this month probably is higher than during the like period last year, officials said. Results of the survey conducted by Administrator MacDonald are particularly significant because they give the first indication that the June-August slackening of residential building may be draw ing to an end. Any portents of re viving construction are regarded much-liked neighbors stepping M. Now I have a little tip for those who haven't seen the house yet. You'll find it nicer to come early in the afternoon when there are not so many here. And those who can should come on week days because there is certain to he a crowd here on Sunday. Finally. I want to say that I am truly proud of this Demonstra tion Home and the part I have had In showing it to the people of the Klamath country. PUBLIC INVITED TO HEAR BANKER ADDRESS CLUB Hans S. Pfeund of Portland, secretary of the Oregon Bankers association. will be the guest speaker at the regular luncheon meeting of the 2030 club at the Willard hotel Wednesday noon, Septemtkr 29. Inasmuch as this will be Pleund's only speaking engagement during his one day stay in the city, the public is OPEN 1 P.M. TO 8 P.M. DAILY UNTIL OCTO as important here because of the widespread belief in administra tion circles that building activity must give the recovery movement its nest year impetus. NationViride Portant Good Although September figures for the entire country have not yet been complied, preliminary re ports on a nation-wide basis indi cate that remidential construction may be closing the gap between this year's and last year's levels which was opened by the summer slump. Mortgages accepted for appraisal by FHA field offices during toe three weeks ended September 11 aggregated 130,962,000, or only 12 per cent below the total for the like weeks last year, accord ing to figures made public yes terday. This compared with an Is per cent decline under last year during the month of July. A part of this apparent recovery as compared with last year may be due, however, to the fact that July. 1936, was a month of ex ceptional activity, making the spread between that month and July, 1937, especially large. cordially invited to attend this luncheon. Pfeund is considered one of the ablest speakers in Oregon, and his subject, "Public Bene factor No. 1," is sure to appeal to anyone interested in the fi nancial and political economics of the state and nation. Pre liminary arrangements t o r Pfeund's visit to Klamath Fails were made by Glen C. Lorenz, vice president of the First Na tional bank of Portland. Roy T. Premo is chairman for the luncheon and is making arrange ments for special entertainment for the occasion. Reservations for this luncheon may be made by calling the Wil lard hotel, and officers of the 20-30 club request they be made by Tuesday noon. LOS ANGELES. However, the lucky purchaser with a down payment of 91428.01 In cash has not yet showed UP. If it was an automobile, the purchaser would have to pay one third down and the balance at a considerably higher rate of Pay ment and Interest than is staked for the home at Mitchell and Gar den streets. Those who have offers to make for the down payment other than cash can list them with the host ess and they will be given careful consideration by the committee., The house is the latest 1937 model type, designed and built under the supervision of a com petent architect, out of the beat materials by mechanics who put their finest efforts into producing a home that anybody would be proud to own, committee mem bers said. It Is located in a section of the city which is steadily improving in values and in "livability," they pointed out.
