We got a "break" last weeIZ end and went along on such a trip, a memorable Jaunt out through the great open spaces to the south and east of Klam ath Falls. It totaled up to about 850 miles of easy driving. and although it carried us into some mighty remote spots, the roads were uniformly smooth. We had set Allures as the break fast stop. and we were there a couple of hours later. As most Xlaniath country motorists know, the road to Allures is a fine, smooth dive. with the excep tion of the jolting mile and a half south of Tulelake. Inci dentally, that was the worst bit Of road we encountered on the entire trip. Between Allures and Canby construction crews are taking the roly-poly twists out of the Altures-Redding highway. This is rugged, pic turesque country. the road pass ing through unique rock forma tions and climbing up on the highlands to the east of Goose lake. Up somewhere near Willow ranch we left the Altures-Lakeview highway, turning southeast on the road through Fandango pass. It is dirt surface, but it is good. A few miles of steady climbing. and we came out on the summit of the Warner range. Before us lay the startling sweep of the valleySurprise val ley, and well named. Right be low and off to the south was a great expanse of dry lake bed. It was a hot day. and the dust devils were playing out there over the shimmering, whitish surface of the valley floor. Coast Down Corkscrew As we coasted down the cork screw that is the Fandango pass road on the east slope, we could see more and more of the north ern end of the valley. Soon we were in Fort Bidwell, quaint little town amid great, old trees and green meadows. The dirt streets that afternoon were a patchwork of sun and shadow, and a restful quiet prevailed. Everybody, the man at the gas pump told us, had gone to the fair at Cedarville. We drove up around the quad rangle of the old fort itself. 'There is an Indian reservation in that area, and we saw Indian children playing in the yards of the houses that surround the old parade ground. A modern hos pital building stands on the hill I back of the old fort. Oasis in Desert We took off north from Bid- well, passing through meadows near the town and then striking off into the high desert coun try. Soon sagebrush, rim rock and dry creek beds made up the scenery. As we crawled along towards the Oregon line, how ever, we would suddenly come Over a rise and down into a fine looking basin, with hay stacks out on the rich meadows. and large ranch houses standing among huge trees.
