This is the nineteenth in a series of 20 articles by Dr. Morris rishbein. dealing with the func tion of glands in the human body. By DR. MORRIS FISHBEIN Editor Journal of the American Medical Association, and of Hygeia, the Health Magazine Situated behind the thyroid gland in the throat near the wind pipe are two soft, reddish bodies, each about the size of a bean. They are known as the parathy roid gland.. When these glands are removed, the person concern ed suffers from a condition called totany. In tetany there are spasmodic movements, loss of weight, pain and tingling in the hands and feet, cramping in the legs and arms, and other serious symptoms. The hair may fall out and the nails may change. The skin be comes thinner and there is a great deal of excessive perspiration. The parathyroid glands are con cerned with the manner in which the human body uses calcium and phosphorus. Calcium and phos phorus are important in the devel opment of bones and teeth. Cal cium in the blood Is of importance in controlling the degree of irrita bility of nerves and muscles. Cal cium is important inathe clotting of blood. Since the parathyroid glands are known to have these definite ef fects on the body by the secretion which they pour directly into the blood, it is now possible to use the parathyroid glandular ma terial for definite purposes in the control of symptoms of disease. When parathyroid glandular ex tract is given to the human being by injection, the amount of cal cium in the blood is increased and the amount of phosphorus is decreased. Calcium necessary for the blood is obtained in some cases by with drawing it from the bones, so it is 'minnoww to give extra calcium in the diet nr as a drug in order that the bones may not be changed Ut3iii 4:01W11 Pin balls Roll Again T HOSE readers who find themselves somewhat con- I fused about the pinball situation need not feel ashamedthey are no worse off, apparently, than the public authorities. The district attorney hits been be-deviled by varying legal decisions and interpretations from downstate, by sore pinball operators, and by a revenue-hungry city council which obviously knows little about the pinball situation except that it brings WOO a year or there abouts into city coffers. Immediately after the prosecutor had shut down pin balls, along came a Polk county decision in favor of the operators. He stuck it out for seven days, and then succumbed to a demand by the city council that the city's pinball licensees be freed from danger of arrest or confiscation activities. It is probably just as well that things have worked out as they have, pending a supreme court test of the legality of the 1935 law that authorized municipalities to license (or prohibit) certain devices "involving an element of skill." Such a test is in the wind, and eventually a popular vote on the pinball question is to be had. There are certain features of the situation, however, that are not healthy. One is the way the pinball inter ests have been able to play hide and seek, legally and otherwise, with the authorities. The other is the seem ing tendency of various municipal authorities, to look on anything that brings in revenue as all right because it does just that. Finally, there is the possibility that youngsters will play these gaming devices. Many of the business people who have pinball boards in their places are careful about this matter, and they are to be commended. But there are some places where minors do play the games. About the only way this thing can be detected is to send a minor around to play the devices, and that, of course, has its undesirable aspects. It would be encouraging if the police would use a little more vigilance against the practice of permitting minors to play pinballs, whia is definitely prohibiad in the city ordinance. Paul Mallon Back Again AFTER a prolonged absence, Paul Mallon retums to this page today with his pithy interpretations of the important news of our times. Mr. Mallon last spring severed connection with the firm that had been syndicating his articles. He signed up with another firm, and then went on a trip to Europe. Because of the favorable comments of many readers upon Mr. Mallon's column, we decided to stay with him through the change, at some increased cost under the new set-up. We believe that our decision was justified, and that Herald-News readers will agree with us. Mr. Mallon is one of the very best commentators of the times. His summer tour of Europe adds that much more to his background and insight into important affairs. EN The Family Doctor by the excess of calcium taken from them. It is known also that vitamin D Is of importance in controlling the use of calcium by the body. In sufficient amounts, vitamin D will raise the amount of calcium in the blood and increaae the ab sorption of calcium from the in testines. Chief advantage of parathyroid extract intitead of vitamin D on certain occasions lies in the fact that parathyroid extract brings about an effect more promptly. The effects last about 24 hours after one injection. It is possible, of course, to inject calcium di rectly into the blood as well. In certain instances as, for ex ample, in radium poisoning and lead poisoning, the use of para thyroid material will help re move poisonous material from the body. The function of the parathyroid gland is, however, to preserve a normal nervous system and a nor mal amount of muscle action. Since the heart is a muscle, a change in the amount of calcium may definitely affect the heart. When a woman is going to have a child, she moat supPlY the child through her body with the necem sary amounts of calcium and phos phorus for its growth. If it is not supplied, the child's body will actually take calcium and phos phorus from the mother's body.
