At Modoc Field
Trailing along five runs behind
In the eighth inning with almost
sure defeat looming ahead, the
never-say-die Klamath Falls Red
Sox came through In a sensa
tional finish to def.eat the Grants
PaBa Merchants by a spore of 9-8.
This win uot only saved the rec
ord of the Red Sox in losing no
games on Modoo field this season,
but also put them up with Grants
Pass in the league standing, both
teams being tied for first place.
Floyd Shipman, veteran of many
baseball seasons, was the spark of
the Sox hitting line-up through
out the game. In five times at bat
Captain Shipman slammed out four
safe hits and; crossed home plate
twice.
McLean Hits Hard
McLean, fast Indian catcher for
the Merchants, hit safely three
out of five times at bat, leading
nil team-mates in hits.
In the second, Grants Pass hit
Carlstrom for four safe bingles,
scoring two runs, and had the
Klamath boy hard pressed. The
Merchants slammed out two more
tilts In the third Inning to score
one run before Carlstrom settled
down to soma real pitching.
The Sox did not score until the
fifth off Hardy, Grants Pasa' out
standing southpaw chucker.
the fifth and sixth frames. Hardy
allowed three bits and two runs.
Neither side hit nor scored in the
seventh.
Grants Pass decided ' to cinch
the game In the eighth and ran
up the score four more runs on
three safeties, with a score of
to 1 staring them In the face, the
undaunted Sox combination lash
ed back at Hardy, hitting him
hard for four hits and crossing
the slate six times, when the
Merchants' Infield faltered and
played raggedly at a time when
Hardy needed support badly.
' ' The Merchants came through to
tla the score in the ninth and
final session of the game, when
nariman doubled and scored on
McLean's hard hit ball to second
base.
The 8ox came to bat and Carl'
Strom singled off Hardy, who was
relieved at this point by Lannlng,
Brooks sacrificed Carlstrom to
second, who scored on Shlpman's
single.

Seattle Regains
First Position
In Coast Race
By the Associated Press
Seattle, the only first division
club that was not kicked around
considerably by lowly foes, found
Itself today back at the top ot
the Coast league atandinga, lead
ing Oakland by a game and half.
The Tribe finished up a suc
cessful week in Los Angeles Sun
day by splitting a pair with (be
Seraphs, losing the first game 1-4
and coming back in the nightcap to
triumph, S-S to grab their fifth
contest of the week.
PADRES STOP OAKS
Oakland succumbed to sterling
San Diego pitching, and finished
on the short end of 2-2, and 1-0
scores. San Francisco's Seals won
the first from Portland, 6-0, then
had their five-game winning
streak shattered in the second
game, t-S.
The Ban Francisco Missions sal
vaged the odd game of the series
from Sacramento by winning the
closing contest, 5-1, after drop
ping the opener 2-5.
The seala fondly eyed a first-
division berth after their rout of
the Beavers in five games, last of
which was gathered in when Sam
Gibson manacled the losers. Bill
Posedel did "all right until 1 the
seventh when - the Seals scored
four runs: two of which scored on
Ted Norbert s triple. Eleven Bear-
era went to bat in the first inn
ing of the second game to score
seven runs and make George
Casters 16th victory easy.
Six Hita out of Eight
Good relief pitching by Bill
Selnsoth nailed the Missions in
the first game, but Walter Beck
was effective In the second.
Bill Lawrence and Freddie Mul-
ler had a good day at bat while the
Angels and Indiana were break
ing even. Lawrence got six for
eight in two games, while Muller
hit five for eight, Including a
homer In each fray.
The efficacy of pitching at
Emmeryville was demonstrated by
the fact that the Padres gleaned
only 44 hits off ' Oak pitching,
while tb Acorns were making .
an average of less than seven hits
per game. With the exception of
Saturday's 7-1 game, every con
test wsa close. Manuel Salvo
hurled a two-bitter to give San
Diego a 1-0 win Sunday. Ken
Douglas weakened in the drawn-
out first' contest, and after a
double play with the bases full In
the sixth saved his skin, the
Padres scored two rum In the
eighth to go ahead.
