1'rlnclpat reason ror Indecl-
alve action on the load limit ia

tweon the councilmou.
Van Camp, who ponored the
ordinance, wanted logging truck
ruled ofr the aeco;idary gravelled
or paved atreou, eapocially Front
atreet, over which IJoug Puckett
haula log to a landing on the
upper lako, before a chance ror
further damage could orlne.

Councilman C. A. Thoma (b
vored aa eventual bar on log-
glug truck but wanted present
limit regulations left In force
until a committee or citlxena
could InveallKute bow much dam
age waa bel-.ig doue by the trucka
or at least until Puckett could
complete hi contract with the
Algoina Lumber company. He
proposed that ror the time bolng
tho speed limit for truck using
Front atreet be reduced to 10
mllea an hour or leaa. City En
gineer E. A. Thoma agreed that
this would help.
Councilman J. E. Honking and
Harry (Joeller .vrero definltoly
against tho proposed ordinance.
Ilosklng saw tbe lumber Indus
try, "Klamath'a bread and but
ter," bolng sold down the river,
and Goeller opined that If the
ordinance passed he "wouldn't
even be able to have a load or
wood delivered to my house."
I'urkPtt Present
Mayor Maboney appeared to
side with Tliomaa, while Coun
oilman i. 3. Keller expressed no
opinion at all In the matur, be
yond seconding the motion which
passed the ordluuaco tram first
to second reading.
Dong Puckett was nretmit at
tho meeting, supported by Klmer
liulalger and Jack Kimball of
Weyerhaeuser Timber company.
Puckett fluid that his contract
with Algoina waa 70 per cent
nneil now, but that it the ordl
imneo panned It would bo Impos
sible for him to complete the
operation.
Unman" Ix nled
"Reducing tho load limit one-
half would cut my pay load by
three-(junrtera," Puckett said.
"That wouldn't even pay tot the
gasoline. "
Puckett also denied that the
damage to Front street had
befin caused by bis loaded trucks,
"look at the left side of the
street," bo Invited tho council
"It's In as bad shape, as the right
side over which the' truck pass.
Those two bad holea wer there
last year beforo I ever started
hauling by that route."
Ilosklng agreed. "Wo have
holea on atreet all over town
which have to be repaired every
year. Trucka might not ' have
anything to do with them."
Van Camp Objects
Van Camp demurred. "That
might be all right If there were
no alternative, but the truckers
can Just as readily use tbe state
roads and streets. There Is no
question Front street Is being
damaged, and tbe city's proper
ly must be protected."
Kimball or Weyerhaeuser said
that to Interrupt the log haul
ing now would bo to do a grave
Injustice to 1'uckott and to se
riously Inconvenience the Algo-
ma company.
"ir you investigate, give the
lumber operators duo notice,
then pass this ordinance, all
right. But I plead with you not
to pass it now under an emer
gency clause," Kimball said. .
