ADVANCES IN
CHEESE PRICE
SEEN MONDAY
PORTLAND, May 21. (AP)
Advancing tendency In cheese
prices continued the main factor
in the trade of the east, accord
ing to the weekly surrey of tha
Journal. Higher prices were gen
erally forced In the eastern mar
kets, both exchanges at Plymnuth
advancing e 111. for the late
scsnlon with a rather keen de
mand for all offerings.
Btrength of the cheese trade
at eastern points and at least
steadiness In the local position,
suggested the continued dry
weather In the chief producing
sections of the territory east of
the Rockies.
Hereafter the Produca Ex
change will hold Its meeting Sat
urday morning Instead of Friday
afternoon. Present prices on extra
butter are out of Una with a
greater spread on the exchange
than on the open market.
Rather strong trading tone was
showing for eggs here but with
out price changes. Receipts eon
tinned to decrease while demand
was well maintained at all coast
points.
Demand for live chickens of
all sorts was good despite the
ronewed attempt on the Produce
Exchange to force a lower price
In some lines. There was an
actual shortage- In the lines sug
gested for lower prices.
Strawberry prices were firm
with a short aupply comparable
with demand. Local shipping call
was good. Quality .was generally
good.
Market for green peas has
started climbing here with in
mnnd somewhat In excess of sup
ply for the week's opening. 8ales
were made by jobbers to 4 14 -6c
lb.
For the week's opening there
waa no change In value on coun
try killed meats. Veal Joined
other commodities In showing at
least a steady tone at late pre
vailing prices.
A well held deal wai showing
for asparagus with late advanced
prices generally maintained.
Hhlpping call remained favorable
and prices reflected .this.
Tomatoes 1n large supply and
only bcit stuff held steady.
All citrus fruits were firmer
to higher.
Cantaloupe market was strong
to higher again.
Whit potatoes continued to
overtop garnets in price.
Borne plums In crates were be
ing offered $4 for four baskets.
Rhubarb getting : scarce and
prices firmer.
Cabbage waa steady to firmer
and higher In spots.
Loganberries and ' raspberries
about steady.
Early cherries continued with
lack of demand.
BOSTON WOOL
BOSTON, May 21. (AP) (U.
S. Dept. Agr.) New fleece wools
appeared a little steadier aa late
reports Indicated It had become
difficult to buy In the country
at the recent low pricea offered
and that occasionally prices
slighty higher than recent lows
bad been paid.
Estimated receipts of domestic
wool here reported to the Boston
Grain and Flour Exchange dur
ing the week ' ending May 19
amounted to 1,826,600 pounds
compared with 1,201,200 tba
