Feminizing High Schools
,
THEY AREN'T DOING IT AT K. U. H. S.
.
A Good Scout Passes On
Uaiance Attained
At Local School
Several column of the current issue
of the Oregon Voter are devoted to a
discussion of the feminization of the
school' of Oregon, especially the high
school, and the evil effect thereof.
The Voter finds cause for considerable
concern in the fact that, largely for
salary reasons, men are abandoning
the Oregon high school teaching field
as rapidly as possible, either for other
work or for school systems in other
states. Says the Voter, in noting the
complete de-masculinizing of the ele
mentary schools and a trend in that di
rection in the high schools:
"Through youth as well as through
childhood the young people of Oregon
will be educated in a world of women
and children to face a world in which
masculine controls are a practical real
ity that must be faced."
Agreeing that it is important to make
the high school coaching field attrac
tive to men, it is interesting to examine
the situation in Klamath Union high
school.
Here there has been a distinct ten
dency to build up a strong male teach
ing force. In fact, a virtual balance
has been attained between men and
women teachers this year. There are 14
men, including the principal, and 15
women. The proportion of male teach
ers in Klamath Union high school is
well above the average for schools of
its class in the state. A Portland school
about which the Voter comments has
six men teachers and 30 women.
As against Klamath Falls' half and
half. Baker has twice as many women
as men. Corvallis has almost three
times as many. Medford, Eugene and
Salem have twice as many, and Ash
land has three times as many. Bend,
on the other hand, has nine men and
fourteen 'women.
The situation at the local high school
is the more gratifying because there is
also a definite effort made to distribute
the teaching work to make the most of
the instructional and inspiration qual
ities of the men teachers, as well as of
the women teachers. From the stand
point of maintaining the masculinity of
the high school instructional force, it is
apparent that a good Job is being done
here.
It should, however, be added that a
majority of the high men teachers here
are young, and to them the size of sal
aries is not such a vital problem at the
moment. Probably most of them aspire
to higher paying work outside the high
school teaching field, such as adminis
trative activity,, or college teaching.
This does not mean that they are not
doing a good job now, because they
are. But it indicates that there is, un
doubtedly, a serious problem in making
the high school teaching field attrac
tive as a life work to men.
End Comet While
Doing "Good Turn"
We did not have a personal acquaint
ance with Rons Hitman, the young man
who was killed near Kly, Nevada, by a
snowslide the other day, and who will
be riven a Boy Scout funeral here next
Sunday. But what we have been told
of Ross places him very definitely in
our mind as a young man who exempli
fied the finest things for which the Boy
Scout movement stands.
The manner of his death iUclf tells
that story. With a companion, he had
volunteered to take medicine to a camp
in the mountains which had been in
vaded by sickness. He was on his way,
when the mountainside released its
crushing attack. He died, as a good
Scout would want to die. doing the
traditional "good turn." The memory
he leaves with those who knew him
and worked with him is one to be cov
eted by all of us.
Jury Attitude
Toward Women Changes
In olden days, when the great west
was noted for its chivalry, it was vir
tually impossible to convict a woman
of major crime. The male juries sim
ply refused to bring in a verdict of
guilty if the defendant was of the ten
der sex and had any kind of a story
at all.
In more recent times, women have
been fighting for equality with men
out in the west as elsewhere. They
have won the vote. They hold office.
They smoke. They work and earn. And,
along with these results, they are find
ing that the single standard holds as
well in the criminal courts.
As example, the short work made of
the Winnie Ruth Judd murder trial at
Phoenix by a jury of 12 men. On the
same day. another male jury's verdict
sent Pearl O'Loughlin, red-haired flap
per wife of Denver, to a life of hard
labor for murdering her step-daughter.
Mrs. Olive Lemmons, quiet ranch wo
man, was adjudged guilty of trying to
poison her husband's relatives, and she
faces a long prison term.
Of .course, there is a possibility that
the absence of convictions of women in
the records of earlier days indicates
that women of the old west were more
genteel and less inclined toward vio
lent deeds. Even so. there must have
been a few transgressors.
Old Man Winter is a persistent old
cuss.
More promising than some advance
comment indicated was the part the
United States played in the disarma
ment conference Tuesday. There had
been considerable expression of disap
pointment when it was reported some
time ago that America would not offer
a definite program at the conference.
Yet it did have concrete proposals to
offer, coinciding in many ways with
the British proposals, and the address
of the American, Hugh Gibson, can be
said to have contributed much toward
amity and progressive sentiment of the
conference.

Health
Talks
Dr. tlrown describe the rat of
a man who had auffered for some
I ten yeara with frequent attacks of
pain In the hack. Finally h could
not ride la an automobile, lift any
thing, or even lean over to put on
his shoe without getting a catch
In hla back.
It was found that the habitual
position ot hia body was In th ex
treme range or motion of his
spine, particularly low down on
th bark, and that aa a result It
took but alight effort to produce
a strain. Associated with the
backache ther waa a longstand
ing record of Indigestion, head
achee, and nervousness. Th man
realised that ha had been over
working, and that he was In gen
eral fatigued.
At first It waa difficult for the
man to lie In bed, because the
hack waa more uncomfortable In
hed than w hen he waa on his fet.
However, he was able to get good
reat by placing one of two pil
lows undr his kneea. taking the
strain off the lower part ot his
spin. Milling In bed In an erect
position put mor atralu on the
spin than when k waa on hit
feat.
If th spin ran he retted by
having th patient II fac down
ward with plllnwa under hla hips.
Iha opportunity muy ha used to
apply hot pacta to the hack In to
llers tha pain and liiflaiiiiniitloii.
Tha patient waa taught to breathe
properly and effnrta were made
to atrsngihea hla abdominal mus
cles so as to help distribute his
weight properly. A brace wns
planned which helped him to hold
himself In th proper position,
and when tha patient got back on
hla feet he waa lauaht how to use
hla body mor correctly in th alt
ting, atandlng and bending posi
tions. When h finally learned
how to sit and aland rorrecily, his
backarh and Indigestion cleared
up. and ha waa asked to rim us"
his routlu uf llf so aa to over
come hla constant fatigue.
This record la an Indication of
an Immense amount ot atuitv and
the car necessary In order to
to lake rare properly of a psll-nl
with backache. The diet, the
amount of fluid tsken and the
amount of reat are all Important.
It la not possible merely to treat
th painful point and to take It
for granted that that will rellose
th condition.
