HAUfe! TWO 1MB EVENLNU HERALD, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON January 25, 1932 Impatience Spoils Grid Gossip Klamath Football Back ers Worried About Coaching Situ ation for Next Fall. lly joe pk;ney Alumui assorlatlone. boards of strategy and the general run of "disinterested" foot ball enthusiasts ran develop unconscious maliciousness in their tnexplalnahle fashion of leaving the ranka of specta tors to become the "minds be hind the guns." Schools, college! and unl venules go to their backers for athletic support in one way or another, and the backers Immediately become impressed by a sense of importance, and almost universally take up op portunities of extracting trib ute for their obligations. There is absolutely nothing reprehensible about "good natured advice from private eltliens to the football officials as long as it is unadulterat ed good-natured. but otten civic pride and civic ambition move the so-called backers out of the realm of pleasure Into the depths of interference. There baa developed an un dercurrent of dissatisfaction among a definite set of ath letic enthusiasts in Klamath Falls. The high school, the only organised amateur ath letic institution here upon which cltitena may lavish de aire for victory, not aa a goal for the team alone, but aa a goal for the town, apparently could easily become the most expedient object for promotion activities. The football people of Klamath Falls have had good reaaon to take more than pass ing Interest in the 1931 Pell ran team, in Leslie Avrit, and in his prospects for next au tumn. Unlying records show miserable absence of any sort of consistent football vic tory drives, and last tall the city was surprised into jubil ance when Avrit, in his tlrat year here, produced a team go ing through the season with only two defeats, Medford and Eerid. If victory Is the medium ot describing athletic progress, certain football followers In Klamath Falla want more progress. They hare decided, among themselves. Leslie Av rit Is the man to bring about this progression. But alieady this same group hss bs;run to fuss and fume with the fear Avrit might not want to come back to Klam ah Frlla for another season. The fnssing and fumlnr has alirost escaped its limits of oljrtlveness. and unles these w?ll lntcntloned people be ware they will spread too thoroughly harmful and per haps unfounded rumors which may unpleasantly affect the liil football program. It must not be forgotten Paul T. Jackson, principal of the high school, is thoroughly "sold" on the idea of athletics' beneficial and necessary posi tion in prep activities- Jsck son believes there must be an asslmlllatlon of mind and body to bring out the best in his students. And if Mr. Ja-kson's words at the football banquet just before Christmas have been correctly recalled, he himself is more than pleased with Leslie Avrit and Al Sinclair, and would like nothing better than to have them taking care of the physi cal training of the Klamath Falls boys on Modoc field next fall. The Inordlnant desire ot Klamath people to see Med ford defeated may have Im paired their reason. In one year the Pelican football team under Avrit has come up to the line of victory, at the same time maintaining every ounce of sportsmanship and excellent training. There's not the slightest need for football fans In the city to grow impatient, and nurture unnecessary fears that Leslie Avrit may not return or may not want to return. Whatever the understanding If any existing between the coach and the principal, it would be ridiculous to go ahead of things Instead of waiting for the year to run a normal course until contracts are signed In the spring.
