PA OR FOUR THE EVENING HERALD. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON ppremfior w, I!M1 Editorials News of Other Days Place Names Women's Features New Idea-Potatoes In Boxes PINE CONTAINER PLAN INTRIGUES HooverMessageHeartening Constructive Ideas Are Advanced PRESIDENT HOOVER'S message to congress indicates the vast amount of thinking and hard labor the execu tive has devoted to the economic prob lems of the day. His plans to end the paralysis of credit and his recommenda tion for Increased taxation to insure the stability of the government, are the outstanding features of a message which faces facts as they are and rec ognizes the responsibility of presiden tial leadership. Aid for business and suffering indus-, tries, and help for the small borrower and home owner, are the objects of constructive proposals in the president's message, many of which have been an nounced in recent months and have received the endorsement of sound thinkers. The president sums up conditions in this paragraph: "The situation arises largely from an unjustified lack of confidence. We have enormous volumes of idle money in the banks and in hoarding. We do not re quire more money or more capital we need to put what we have to work." In bur own area, the president's views on anti-trust law revision and railroad problems are of particular import. Be lief is widespread that procedure under the anti-trust laws, particularly as ap plied to industries based on natural resources such as lumbering, should be revised to aid in eliminating cut-throat competition and enormous waste. Con solidation to improve conditions of the railroads, and regulation of the rates of competitors of railroads, are matters of the utmost importance to the future prwpertty of the railroads, and are thus of no small significance to our own community. Space does not permit an all-inclusive discussion of the message. Sufficient to say that it gives congress a definite frorkta- program, at this writing it already has been thrown open to de bate, and we shall see what happens. Downtown Decorations Are Attractive ROWS of Christmas trees along the curbs, and strings of colored lights across Main street,' give downtown Klamath Falls a most appropriate ap pearance as the holiday season opens. The committee in charge of this phase of decorations has done its work well. It is to be hoped there is wide spread response this year to the request that householders decorate the exterior of their homes for the Christmas season. Cheerful, .indeed, will be the appear ance of the city if the residence district matches the business area in Christmas decorating. How Two Industries May Benefit SOMEWHERE under the surface are innumerable ideas which, when brought forth some day and applied successfully, will call for the sentiment of that oft-repeated question: "Why didn't somebody think of that before?" Such may be the destiny of a sug gestion advanced by Leslie Rogers pro posing the packing of Klamath potatoes in pine boxes. The plan has intriguing possibilities when viewed in the light of the welfare of the two greatest in dustries of the Klamath country. An attractive pine box of potatoes, nicely put up and washed in the new process recently introduced here, should be welcome, indeed, in the apartment kitchens of the nation. In the vast growth of apartment residence lies per haps, the greatest possibility for ad vancing the boxed potato idea, al though it stands to reason that this in viting package would be welcome in any kitchen or store room. Combined with the potato washing project, the idea is especially attractive, and one hazards a guess that the vast number of people who like to buy higher class products would willingly pay more for potatoes available in this fashion. While the box containers would be heavier than the burlap sacks now in use. it is pointed out that maximum use of the weight allowance in each freight car would be possible with boxes, while it is not with burlap sacks because of the fear of damaging potatoes in the lower tier of sacks. There, is no com parison between boxes and sacks from the consumer's standpoint. Sale of Klamath potatoes in attrac tive 25 or 50 pound boxes in this fashion, if successful, undoubtedly would encourage similar projects in other potato growing regions. The growth of wooden box usage is, of course, vitally important to the future prosperity of the Klamath region, and one can readily see that increased oper ation of the box factories here would bring about greater local demand for Klamath potatoes. It is an interesting study in inter-relating two industries. . There will, of course, be .practical ob jections to the plan. But anything that can be done to help the box shook man ufacturer, or to boost the prestige of the Klamath potato, is well worth think ing about. The idea is presented. Let us hear more about it One sometimes wonders if these early Christmas gifts are a response to the mail early plea or just a way of obli gatin us while yet there is time. Apparently he had. He got up auddenly, and with no more than a nod to excuse hlmaelf, walked away. He had a fine air of non chalance, atopping at the rail to peer at a passing ahlp, lighting a cigarette, ambliug off. Alary breathed "You made me ahlver when you talked like that!" Mr. Jupiter took bli pipe out of his month, rubbed a nobby fore fiuger acroaa hla nose, but aald not hlng. Mary shuddered. "I didn't know you metnt to go that far," ahe whUpered fearfully. In spile of the utter Indifference of hla listener. Ratea showed up for that meal, but The Fly waa ron.nt.nnnslv absent (, chose to eat In his room, but from the coming and goings of his steward, and the content of their trays, he seemed more occupied In drinking than In eating. The yacht had "turned the cor ner" at Key West about o'clock, and they were now steaming steadily westward along the keys. When Mary went to her state room ahe had beard more than enough talk of fishing for one day she found Louise there be fore her. "It la now tomorrow," that lady began directly. "I wish my bracelet, please." Mary could hardly mask her surprise. She had Just beard Louise confessing to De Loma that ahe did not have it could not get It. "I'm afraid it's still In the Am bassador safe," ahe replied with some annoyance. "Can't you wait?" "How long?" Mary thought of the press clip pings now reposing In Mr. Jupi ter's safe, and of all they confirm ed about this predatory creature and her waya. , Why keep up the pretense? "I'm afraid it must atay there for some time," ahe answered shortly. The other nodded to herself several time, then spoke In a grating voire. "Brace, then. Is right when he says you are what-j you-rall a gold-digger, eh?" "Quite right! There Is no more to be aald. Now go, please." The Countess turned and walk ed alowly to the porthole,1 and stood looking out. "I did not come to ask ahout that, really." she aald, and there waa Infinite weariness in her voire. "But about the other. You niado me an astonishing offer. If you remem ber. The ruby necklace If I went away and left you Bruce. I was furious. The girl stared. "May I ask what caused you to change your mind? You certaialy didn't feel thla way yesterday!" Louise turned away, fiercely Impatient at the questioning. "What do you care? Would Louise accept the necklace even though It was re-' puted to be worth hundreds of thousand, unless she had lost hope of gaining millions? Not likely.
