Thursday, October 8, 1931 Athletics, School yUST what re the dividends Klamath Falls begins re- ceiving- Friday on its $35,000 investment in an athletic 'lant at Klamath Union high Criticism of alleged i as served to turn an evaluating spotlight on all man' er of school sports, and high school athletics has not een overlooked in this somewhat unconscious effort to determine whether it is worth while to devote energy nd money to this sort of thing. The effect on scholarship of those participating in ports is talked about a great deal, and rightly so. But pparently those who would criticize this phase of ath- etlcs have made little actual here is usually not a great deal behind such remarks as his: "He's an athlete. He doesn't have to know any-hing." Our interest, at the moment, ere is what Principal Paul ii'gh school, who is also president of the Oregon State Ugh School Athletic association, has to say: "Before a boy can play fcood student The Oregon tssociation has rules requiring every athlete to keep up n his studies, and does not permit a student to engage n athletics who falls below "In Klamath Union high school the athletes are hecked each week in all of their studies to see that they ire fulfilling this requirement. If, during any week, an thlete falls below the grade specified, he is prohibited rom participating in the game that week-end. "It is a fact that football has been the means of Im roving the scholarship of many a boy. It Is entirely rroneous to think that football players are favored by nstructors. Before they an be sure they have performed satisfactorily in the lass room." That, it seems, takes care of the scholastic side of the luestion, so far as our high There are other important factors involved. Ther was a yonng woman at tb counter. A swinging gat led from th email nclosur to the larger room. Wlthont a moment's hesitation Norma passed through this gate. One of the women arose. "If you'll go back behind the counter," the woman said, "and watt your tarn Miss Eberhardt will consider your case. "You'll bar to wait oa tb other side of th counter!' They went through anoth er door, following the man. It was a smaller office. The man dropped Into the desk chair and waved Norma and Mrs. Carey to seats. "Now then," he said, "what is It you'r so excited about?" Norma and Mrs. Csrey tried to talk at once. In the end It was the older woman who got out the more coherent story. The man listened silently, nodding, occa sionally. When he understood what thny were trying to tell him he pushed an electric desk but ton. A girl appeared at the door. "Bring Miss Clinton's report," h told bar. In a moment tb girl was back with som card. Hit laid them on th desk and departed.
