One of ; the strangest stories going the rounds of the Modoc woods the present season Is the method by ' which a 16-year-old southern , California lad bagged his buck. The boy's father, a famous i uumer, muu uis ineuus were nee- i itant about taking the lad along, i partly because of his tendency to lie abed mornings. Relenting at last he was taken on the hunting trip when it was discovered that the young fellow enjoyed his late sleeps in the mountains just as well as at home. One day the rest of the hunting party re turned to ramp tired and hungry. The father, exasperated, began berating bis son for his laziness since be was still in bed. Yawn ing, . the lad. came back with: "Well, I got my buck Just the same." A little search revealed a nice big buck dead In the bush es where the lad had shot him from his bed as . the animal walked Into camp. "Oh yes." said Mrs. . ' If It hadn't been for my moth er's Interest in the theatre and motion pictures and If it hadn't been for the big salaries and big possibilities. I might hare been a first-rate Insurance clerk. Did I say "first-rate?" Does It sound conceited? Curiously enough I don't really feel that way abont it. I have a little proud feeling that I honestly would have been a success as an Insur ance salesman or agent. Hut Instead of Insurance I turn ed to pictures because It seemed tho possibilities for advancement and earning bigger salaries were greater. It was purely a business venture for me. None of the glam or or lure of public work Influ enced It.
