Area Involved includes part of Die Wood H lvi-r vulley, the en lire Upper Klamath marsh, the head of the Williamson river, parte of Sprague river, the entire Kycan, the entire Chewaucan and all of Little Chewaucan, with minor Infeatatlona scattered aa far south as Lakerlew. All tbe mountain meadows throughout thla entire area were also Infect ed. Total Infested area Involved waa between (00,000 and 700. 000 acree. Funda bave not been available In tbe paat for an eg greaalve campaign of extermina tion. Hltuatlon Waa Herloue The altuatlon waa so serious In 1)30 that stockmen banded together and preaentcd tbe mat ter to tbe authoritlea of tbe va rious counties and government departmenta Involved. Aa a re sult of thla work, funda for 1931 were budgeted as follows: U. 8. Indian aervlce tf.OOO, Klamath county 4, too. Lake county 14. 600. slate of Oregon I7.&00. U. 8. forest service 1450. In addi tion, stock operalora cooperated In the furnishing of equipment, some labor, and In one Instance, took over the payroll amounting to over 11.600. Control operations were placed under tbe supervision of the county agent's offlcea at Klamath Kalla and Lakevlew. Supplies were ordered during tbe fall of 1930 and trucked great distances Into the affected districts during the fall months. Additional sup plies were purchased early in tbe spring and distributed to ee tabllahed ramps throughout this entire territory. Krg beds were plotted during tbe fall and care full checked during the gprlng months and poisoning alerted as r-oou as the young hoppera start ed batching. Active poisoning operatjona were undertaken May 1 and continued until August IS. Poison louiig Hoppera The early poisoning waa on young grasshoppers aa they hatch ed on the egg beda, and after July 4 on the mature hoppers as thny congregated on egg beda, prepara tory to laying eggs for next yesr's crop. A total of over 2,000.000 pounds of poisoned bran maah waa naed throughout the aesaon. Kills were exceptionally good, ranging from to to 1000 dead hoppers per square foot over a vast area. During the peak of the season 100 men were employed in this work by all co-operating agencies. When poisoning was completed, about the middle of August, all egg beds were again definitely lo cated for the 1!32 contemplated operations. It Is estimated that he crop of eggs laid this year waa leaa than 20 per cent of that of laat aeaaon. In aome raaea tbeae egg beda bave been cultivated by land owners, resulting In further destruction. Need Funda In 1033 If sufficient fn-.ds are not se cured for the 1932 campaign, the situation will again become aerl oua In about two years. However, tbe complete carrying out of tbe two-year program aa outlined should reduce tbe graashoppera to such an extent that major opera tions should Dot be necessary for many years. inis district sup ported In 1921 40,000 head of rattle and 125,000 bead of sheep.
