announcement came after the ar
rest of taelTe men and a woman

Kdward Chitwood, head of the
narcotic squad, last night.
Although members of the sus
pected gang, allegedly organlxed
in Bast St. Louis of volunteers
from Chicago and New York,
were held on violation ot the state
narcotlo act, Chitwood said be hsd

Chandler, publisher of the Lns
Angeles Times, which recently
was revealed by notice after the
publisher hsd been placed under
guard. No attempt waa made to
carry out threats against Chan
dler. Investigators said two wealthy
elt Irons hsd been kidnaped and
had paid ransom, but did not
make re pons because of threats
