"Vote For Your Armory"
rpHE words in the above caption appear on placards
" which those advocating the construction of a new
armory have distributed in the city and throughout
Klamath county. Somehow the thought, "vote for your
armory." has been growing on us until we have come to
the realization that it means just what it says:
ARMORY.
Had the individual or committee composing the
slogan worked for a solid year a better one could not
have resulted. The construction of an armory is strictly
i i if -omnlptpr! Will
a community project arm one
Koinr tr. vou and every citizen ot juamam coumj.
armory is not for the exclusive use of the military forces.
Although provided primarily for that purpose the law
cvomino- their maintenance permits its use ior an yuu
lie functions and in many towns of this and other states
u v.- Wnme a civic center. We have only to go over
the Cascades to Ashland and Medford for proof of this.
There the Armory buildings are used for numerous
events of a public and semi-public nature, many of which
would never occur were it not that the armories provided
suitable quarters.
There is not in this rapidly growing city today a
structure of sufficient size to accommodate public gath
erings such as necessity often demands, and for which
there will be an increasing demand in the future. The
new armory will meet that demand and become an asset
to the county as a whole.
The construction of a building such as is proposed
will not 'entail undue expense, and when viewed from the
standpoint of value which the citizens of Klamath county
will derive from it, the proposal cannot help but roll up
a big majority at the election two weeks hence.
In the language of the fellows who are so loyally
devotint time and energy to furthering this good cause,
we say: "VOTE FOR YOUR ARMORY".
Does The Consumer Benefit?
AN address delivered Monday by the president of the
Jnstitute of Meat Packers revealed that most meats
are now wholesaling at from one-fifth to one-third lower
than a year ago.
The announcement is good news only insofar as the
decline is reflected in a correspondingly low price to
consumers. Unless retail prices have been lowered from
one-third to one-fifth the only class to profit by lower
prices is the wholesaler. Those who grow cattle and
other livestock are taking their loss, and unless con
sumers are benefitting by the decline prices for meat are
badly out of adjustment
We are reminded that wheat has been hitting the
skids for some years, yet the decline in price to growers
has not been reflected in the price charged consumers of
bread. It is not difficult to guess who has been making
the profit.

WASHINGTON. Oct. 1
Strange things have boea hap
pening In tbe election campaign,
giving rise to such ordinarily
freakish tboughta that a Repub
lican governor can be elected In
New York and that Democratic
senators can be elected In Ohio
and Illinois with possibly a
Democratic governor in Penn
sylvania.
Perhaps none ot these things
will come to pass, but it takes
sucb possibilities to pep up a
campaign.
Widespread Interest In the
New York gubernatorial contest
Is due both to the part prohibi
tion has been playing In politics
up there and to the fact that If
the Republicans happen to win,
the Democrats of the country will
have to start looking for a H32
presidential candidate with a
grand free-for-all in prospect
Governor Franklin D. Roose
velt la standing for re-election,
opposed by U. 8. District At
torney Charles H. Tuttle of New
York City. Tuttle is a strong
candidate, anyway, and tbe re
cent disclosures ot graft among
Tammany leaders in New York
have provided him with a neat
Issue because Tammany la sucb
an important part of tbe New
York Democracy.
He haa come out for the re
peal of the Eighteenth Amend
ment, ridding himself ot the dis
mal drawback ot being a dry or
straddling candidate In a dis
tinctly wet state. The big threat
to Tuttle, one very likely to de
feat him, is tbe plan of the drys
to run an Independent candidate
who will cut into tbe upstate G.
O. P. vote.
The Tammany Handicap
Roosevelt, now regarded as a
probable presidential nominee in
1932. finds himself faced with
the fact that Tammany votes are
a requisite for victory but tbr.l
Tammany politics is bis main
handicap. He must take a firm
stand against Tammany corrup
tion but still can't afford to get
Tammany unduly Incensed at
htm. As long as Tuttle la wot
he can't depend on many wet
Republican votes as he and Al
Smith have In the past. He is
fortunate, however, in the fact
that voters seldom get excited
abont corruption and tbe odds
seem to remain somewhat la his
favor.
Everyone who has been ont In
the large cities ot Ohio reports
a feeling that Robert J. Bulkier,
wet Democrat, will defeat Sen
ator Roscoe McCulloch, tbe dry
Republican. Republicans in those
cities are often more wet than
Republican. Bulkley baa been
winning the straw votes. Mc
Culloch apparently wilt have to
depend on large majorities from
tbe smaller communltiea, strong
holds of the Anti-Saloon League.
Despite the confidence of Demo
crats and wets In a Bulkley vic
tory, however, it is well to re
member the hard cold facts that
Hoover carried the state over
Smith In 1928 by a majority of
more than 750.000 and that Sen
ator Fess defeated his Demo
cratic opponent that year by
about 600.000.
Illinois Is Puzzle
Illinois went for Hoover by
450,000 and gave Senator Glenn
a majority ot about 275,000. The
Illinois fight looks like a horse
race, but Democrats here are
even more confident ot electing
1. Ham Lewis over Mrs. Ruth
Hanna McCormlck than of elect
ing Bulkely in Ohio. Mrs. Mc
cormick's worst worry concerns
tbe number of dry Republican
votes the Anti-Saloon League can
pull to its Independent candidate,
Mre. Lottie O'Neill. Her next
concern la the question how many
voters oppose the Idea ol oaving
a woman senator and now many
