Preliminary steps to obtain
three new city bridges acrosa the
government canal and the widen
ing of Eleventh alreet to become
one ot the main traftlo arteries
were taken at a meeting ot pro
perty holdera nt the city hall
last night
Paul Johnson, Cliff Dunn.
Percy Murray, Percy Evans and
J. A. Cordon were appointed a
committee ot five by Elmer
Hslsiger, who presided as chair
man, to confer with the city
engineer on the project, obtain
estimates on expenditures neces
sary, and decide on the best pos
sible way to proceed with the
matter.
To Meet July 80
It was voted to hold another
meeting Wednesday night, July
SO, when the committee's report
will be heard.
Since It waa agreed that the
bridges are needed and needed
badly, the discussion centered
around whether property owners
in tbe districts affected by the
new bridges should stand any
expense, or whether an attempt
snouia ne made tu install new
bridges throughout the city and
obtain funds by voting a general
bond.
For ' A rtriilj(e
C. C. Keller tlty engineer,
who has made a careful study of
the matter, estimated roughly
that cost of the Crescent avenue
bridge would be 2j.O0O. the
Eleventh street bridge, $55,000,
the Esplanade bridge. 120.000.
and widening of Eleventh street.
IJ5.000.
The bridges would be class A
concrete structures with orna
mental lights and walka on both
sides.
J. Hlrvi asked It concrete tube
to carry the traffic would be
much more expenalve. The city
engineer explained that the cost
would be approximately the
same, but he did not believe the
reclamation officials would stand
for any possibility ot the recla
mation waters being hampered
by tubings.
&. P. To Remove Pier
This suggestion and one made
by Dr. E. D. Johnson that the
water be gent through siphons
ana me streets constructed
straight through were both ob
jected to by A. M. Thomas, sec
retary ot tbe Klitmath Irrigation
district, on the theory that they
would act as obstructions to the
Irrigation water routed through
the ditch.
Dr. Johnson also atated that
he had beeu Informed that the
Southern Pacific Kallroad com
pany plans to do away with the
iron pier in the center ot Es
plansde street at the appro. ch
to the bridge.
Thomas Against Tunnels
Asked to the possibility ot
having the ditch tunneled, Mr.
Thomas Informed the property
holders that there la auch a bill
before congress requesting that
funds be provided for such a
project, but the fill! baa only a
ininamans cnance of being
passed, according to Mr. Thomas,
and. it the ditch la ever covered,
it will be niauy years from now.
Thomas went on to say that
officiate ot the Irrigation district
would Ilk lo lee the rlty mike
the best of tbe tart that the
ditch does exteud through the
city by Improving Its appearance
with ornamental brldgea and
strips t park. He staled the
Irrigation district would be glad

such plana, but would not stand
for having the water obstructed
New llriilgra Needed
Mayor T. II. Walters alated
that it la readily agreed by prop
erty owners that new bridges are
needed and suggeated that the
cost of tha Improvement! be
equalised by voting a general
bond for half ot the amount and
obtalnlug the remainder through
Bancroft district bonds.
He said he realised a general
bond would be tha Ideal way of
financing construction of now
bridges, but It must he remem
