It la in approaches that the
professional gains his great ad
vantage over the amateur. There
are a considerable number ot
amateurs who can drive from
tha tee as far as most pros or
fsTtber and almost as consistent
ly. Where they get beaten, how
ever. Is In the second shot, but
the mschine-llke accuracy with
which the average pro will place
hla ball, time after time, not
merely on the green-but within
holing distance.
There are of course approaches
and approaches, from tha ortho-
dux, well-lofted shot to the stroke
which can best be described as a
glorified putt. The only precept
in which 1 have the most Im
plicit faith Is that which enjoins
us to ksep the eye on tha ball.
There la no doubt that nine-
tenth ot th bad strokes we
perpetrate, are directly dua to
looking up before tha shot 1
finished and one 1 mora liable
to do this with a short approach
than with any other stroke.
Hard, concentrated work at
this particular shot until one
has mastered It Is no doubt the
best prescription, and I am quit
certain that. It wa could make
up our . mind to practice ap-
proacning for aa hour or so
quits frequently, it would Im
prove our game titty per cent
in a short time. However, it la
much more amusing to play a
match than to practice and so
no doubt most of us will con
tinue to muddle along till tha
and ot th chapter.
