The "head first" slide ha been
almost entirely eliminated by
modern base runners, slthough
great a runner aa rranx
Frisch employs It occasionally
under certain conditions. Many
great base runners ot the past
like John McGraw, Buck Hersog.
Hal Chase and Dodo Paskert
used It exclusively and were suc
cessful. It la Quite often used today
by runners getting back to tint
base when they are caught flat
footed by a quick throw by the
pitcher or catcher.
Hal Chaae uaed to use it when
he was caught so far that the
orthodox "feet first" book slid
waa useless. Ha would throw bis
body head-foremost on way and
give the catcher only hie hand
to touch. When the catcner at
tempted to tag his band he would
change hands and often outwit
the catcher this wsy.
And slso yon can't break any
lege or ankles by the spikes
catching in the dirt or plate
when the head-first elide Is used.
This made thla form ot sliding
quits popular with the veteran
players who felt their legs grow
