Director of Ohio Itelays
From the standpoint of the man who fires the gun al the start
of each preliminary heat and each final race, Gcorgo Simpson is tile
Ideal sprinter. Early in the game tbe Ohio State flyer learned to
place full confidence In the starter's quirk eye and to rely on that
indlridual to give tbe field an eren break at the gun.
George Simpson never has believed in trying to "beat the gun"
or to outguess the starter. Probsbly no other sprinter has been set
back fewer times tor breaking, and simply because tbe fastest human
stays on his marks until the gun Is fired.
Orthodox Starting Fortii.
His starling form, revised slightly to meet the increased eleva
tion of starting blocks, is still the orthodox method moat common
ia American competition. With the command "Go to your marks."
he settles his feet firmly in position, rests his weight on hta rlgttf
knee snd looks steadily down the track, hla arms atratght, the bet
ter to support his weight at the next command.
When tse Words Gt set" are glren. hla back comes up until
it is level and his weight comes forward to tbe last fraction of an
Inch he can gain without losing his balance. His "get set" motion
la a snap motion acquired through many hours of practice and one
that gets him off bis marks without the loss of an Instant.
At the sound of the gun. Simpson's long legs drive him for
ward at almost a 45-degree angle while his right arm drives up
level with his chin and his left cnroei back strongly. Every athlete
soon learns that a strong leg stride must be matched by an equally
vigorous arm action. The ahoulder development in Simpson 1m no
mean factor in his start and powerful running.
Body lns Forward.
Simpson's full stride is almost rlelous, a pounding, springy ex
pression of speed that Is Joy to the followers of the sport. At top
speed, his stride measures approximately nine feet and his body
leans forward at an angle of about as degrees.
Simpson never spares himself in a race, never "coasts" In a
final and probably would not know how to take It easy If he were
told to do so. It is the fierceness of his drire that probably haa
caused the pulled tendons of the Olympic trials and the National
Collegiate championships.
