Total of 40,439 federal Income tax
returns were filed at the Portland
Internal rorcnue office, as against
3.27S last year, Clyde 0. Hunt
ley, collector, said today. Most
of the 4,154 Increase Is In the re
turna on Incomea exceeding f 3000.
Thla group totaled 19,230 returns,
with 13,r,o the fliriire last year.

will meet Friday afternoon, April
4, for the purpose of consider
ing the authorization of an ex
penditure for construction of a
new wing at the state penitenti
ary, and also a number of other
requeala from varloua atato de
partments. The call for the
meeting waa Issued today by
Secretary of Stale I loss at the
request of the atato board of
control.

penitentiary, and It la estimated
that other requests will bring
