Royalty on Sand
SALEM, Ore.. March IS, (A
P) The first payment of royal'
ty on sand and gravel taken
from the Columbia river coder
an act ot the 192S legislature
waa made to the state yesterday,
the amount being $7500. For
some years royalty has been paid
on sand gravel taken from the
Willamette, but no royalty was
received on the Columbia river
deposit for the reason that the
dredging of the stream was near
ly all on the Washington side.
It waa known however, that the
material was washed to the
Washington side from the Ore
gon side. Under act ot the
legislatures ot the two states
In 193 the state of Washington
collects the royalty and divides
equally with Oregon.

an oil fissure In the sea bad
opened.
Several year ago drilling
operation were begun but ceas
ed after a lack ot funds appear
ed. Oil was (truck by one of
the drill but not In sufficent
quantities to continue operations.
