Gay Pieces Shown
Ohlnawar has gone as modern
a wallpapar tor the present day
home, according to an article In
the December Issue of the Amer
ican Home. Every month sees
new designs in table pottery. All
of them have certain qualities in
common: Freedom from conven
tionality, extreme ilmplielty, dec
orative feature in flat, poster-like
colors and eonrentlonallsed forms.
The majority of new piece are in
the heavier form of pottery and
earthenware.
Most of It comes in breakfast
trsy or tea sets, and the design
are variations ot what has become
generally accepted as "the mod
ern form." For example, there
I a breakfast sot which Is a geo
metrlo composition In cones,
cylinders and rings, and comes
la twelve gay pieces. It has a
mat glare and may be had In two
color combinations lemon yel
low with a turquoise lining and
turquoise with a yellow lining.
Luncheon sets are also color
ful, on in lacquer red with black
reed handle on th teapot being
particularly pleasing. It Is a de
parture from the modern triangu
lar pattern. All the forms are
oval, and a quaint touch is given
by the handles to the cups, which
are without holes.
For afternoon tea, there Is a
set In whit German pottery with
a delicate hand-drawn design In
silver. It Illustrates one of the
papular trenoi In modern table
decoration, the use of black and

EDTXOB'S NOTE: With tbe startling new faslUons have come
""ew Mode tn Beauty." They're diaenssed intelligently, interest
ingly in a series ot six article which Claire Luce, world-famed
American beauty, ha written for the Herald and 'KA Service.
Starting her suige career as a dancer. Miss Lace now has become
noted on two continent as an actress. In today's article, the first,
she tells how to beautify the eyes.
By CLAIRE LUCE
Written for XEA Service
There is as much truth as poetry in that old expression, "Eyes
are the Windows ot the Soul."
Nature, ot course, plays an Important part In bestowing that
rare gift of beautifully shaped and expressive eyes upon a fa
vored tew. But there are a great many things that all ot ns can
do to keep the eyes In healthy condition and to Improve npon na
ture If necessary.
Eye-strain Is the on bugaboo w must all avoid If w are
to keep the whites clear, and no matter what color or shape t-e
rest of the eye may be. It the whites are blemished with streaks
of red, it makes tor discomfort and unslghtliness. Reading Is nec
essary, of Course, It we are to Improve our minds but this should
be done, under favorable lighting conditions, at home, or where
one can relax and not in moving trains and busses.
W would throw np our handa In horror at tbe snggestlon that
we leave our face or hands unwashed, yet the eyes which serve
as more than any other organ and are subject to dust and grime
of city streets sad country roads are often allowed to go by
neglected for years st a Urns. A lukewarm solution of borac add
and clean water, nsed as an eye wash every morning, will act as
a protective film for th optics and keep them In a healthy,
clean condition.
Find Time to Beet the Eye.
The girl who is subject to eyestrain because of working under
poor lighting conditions should rest her eyes at all time when
traveling to and from work. Just closing the lids and relaxing
works wonders. A slight eye-exercise such cs rolling them, one
corner to the lower lid. then to the opposite corner and upper lid,
frequently relieves th nervous tension caused by keeping the
eyes too long in one position when working.
The question of make-up tor the eyes an interesting subject,
particularly when one goes out In the evening, t'nder the soft
tights one may Indulge In blending colors that would look out ot
place In broad daylight. In choosing one's eye-pencils, tbe color
ot the hair as well as eye must be taken into consideration. Black
hair calls for a black pencil, bnt used artistically and not applied
In a hard, knotted line. When the eye are light, blue-gray or
blue pencil should be nsed, drawn on the inner curve of the lashes.
A shadow, applied skillfully to the lid, can Increase the size ot
one's eyes green tor hazel eyes,
for grey, and violet for violet. The shadow most be put on care
fully, leaving no hard line over the center of the lids, and care
fully blended to the corners. If this Is used under the eye. it muht
b a vert slim line and most careful In appearance, or an effect
of shadowing "circles" will be evident.

FRUIT SALAD
Th dressing for a fruit salad

A particularly delicate dressing
