Endurance flyers stay up more than 200 hoars In sr plane and
after a bath, shave and a IS-hour anoose are their old aelvea
sgaln. Endurance pitchers star out in the box tor 20 or more
innings in one afternoon and It'e la Question whether they are still
good pitchers or ready for baseball's bone hesp.
- A few weeks ago George tola of the Detroit Tigers pitched
a 21-lnnlng game against the Chicago 'White Sox. It waa a nice
warm afternoon and as Uhle was breeiing along with such con
summate ease. Manager Harris decided to let the big fellow blow
himself to a nice extra inning victory.
Now the baaeball public is debating whether Bucky kicked one
and ruined the Lakewood Bull's arm forever of If I'hle will
shortly snap out ot the slump that overtook him right after the
iron man exhibition.
Trouble Finishing
Uhle, whom Detroit secured from Cleveland during the winter
In a trade, had started oft to be the league's greatest pitcher.
He rolled up a string of .nine consecutive wins. Including the
long-winded one over the Sox. Since then he has had trouble
finishing a game losing five out ot his next seven starts.
Th question of Uhle and hla 21-lnnlng game brings to mind
the longest gsme in the baseball records and the fate of the
oposlng pitchers who engaged In It. On May 1, 1910, Leon Cadore
ot the Brooklyn Robins and Joe Oeschger ot the Boston Braves
hooked up in a hurling duel that went to a !-lnnlng tie. The
score waa one and one when darkness Interrupted further punish
ment both to fans and players.
Oeschger Carried On
Cadore never was the same pitcher after that, but Oeschger
went on to quite a few more years ot big league stardom. The
slim Brooklyn moundsman left something In that game be never
recovered, although he essayed many a comeback.
Oeachger, on the other hand, remained one ot the league's
best pitchers. He was secured by the Gisnts shortly after and
turned in many more extra inning wins for John McGraw before
he waa through.
Back in 1908 the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston
Americans staged a 24-lnnlng endurance contest. Jack Combs wsnt
all the way for the Athletics, while Joe Harris not the fsmous
"Moon" withstood the grind for Boston. Hsrrls finally weak
ened and the Athletics won t to 1.
That game saw the last great effort ot Hsrrls. but it proved
only a workout for Coombs, who carried on to be the nucleus of
Connie Mack's great hurling staff ot a few years later.
