Here and there on the pages ot
baseball history are recorded the
dramatic collapse of powerful
barcball machines but the tall ot
the St. Louis Cardinals. National
League champions In 19iS. thre
atens to go down In the books
as one ot the strangest and
most unexpected ot all form re
versal. For two months the Cards
were In the thick ot the pennant
chase. Then they fell apart.
There have been a number of
explanations for the collapse of
the champion but most ot the
responsibility can be traced back
to a veteran pitching staff that
cracked wide open at a time
when Billy Southworth had no
up-and-coming youngsters cap
able ot stepping into the breach.
Staff Cracks
On June 14 of the current
campaign the Cards had compiled
a record of 34 victories and 19
losrea, a percentage ot clore to
.(50. Since that data the Card'
lnals have lost IS games and
