California s Lethargy
"ALIFOKNIA people should undorstuiul that the road
from San Francisco to Klamath Falls is also the
road from Klamath Falls to San Francisco. The delay
in building California's portion of that highway is cost
ing San Francisco and other California points consider
able business. If it were u big undertaking there might
1 be some reason for the California lethargy which is so
pronounced, but it is not a large project, at all.
Oregon has a number of standard roads built to the
state line and California, with her boasted progressive
jiesa has not connected with a single Oregon road, ex-
Jfept the Pacific highway and that construction is sec
ond grade.
r It was the proper thing for the Klamath Falls Cham
ber of Com merer to take up the' highway question with
California through the legislature of the two states, and 1
lso ask the governor of Oregon to urge upon the gov- J
frnor of California the need of having the roads con
nected, ,-, .
The memorials which will very likely 'be passed by
the Oregon legislature not only calls California's atten- ;
tion to the highway situation, but it also calls attention j
of the entire west to the tardiness of the Golden Gate ;
state in making the most of opportunities offered it
by Oregon. i

Patterson Remains Silent
T face of the fact that Johnnie Kelly, political editor
-of the Oregonian, sees a possibility of Governor Pat
terson becoming senator from Oregon when McKary
goes on the federal b?nch, not a word is uttered by the
chief executive. He holds that silence which is golden,
and which is always good for a newspaper guessing con
test His proposed visit to Washington, D. C, is a trifle
indicative and Kelly may have.the governor well pegged.
At least. Governor Patterson is not inclined to desert
public life at the present time.

FIGHT I CUT!
, The Mariners Do Travel
JOIN the U. S. marine corp and see the world !
The catchword of the blue-clad recruiting sergeant is
pretty nearly justified, at that. Major -General John A.
Lejeunc, commandant of the corps, reveals in his annual
report that in 1928 approximately two-thirds of the en
tire corps sky service outside the United States.
The bulk of these, of course, went to Nicaragua. ,A
large detachmfent was in China, and a good many more
served in Haiti. Then, in addition, the marine contin
gents of various battleships and cruisers did consider
able traveling. .
It begins to look as if the recruiting sergeant's slogan
just about fits the fact.
