May of Ashland transacted busl-l

week end, '
In Beechnut Short' De-bunking article
in the Evening Herald of November 3, 192S
he state that the eight-cent bid for cruising
Klamath county timber was made by the
timbermen.
If Mr. Short honestly believe this, he
i a bigger fool than I thought him. Of
course, Tom-Thomas with hi large straw
hat and crooked cane has been drilling Ibis
into his . head until I wonder if he, Tom
Thomas, doesn't almost believe it himself.
Mr. Short has continually, stated, for
publication or otherwise, that timber could
not be cruised for eight cents per acre.
Mr. Short, for your information, I have
cruised timber in Klamath and Lake counties
by a double run cruise for ten cents per
acre and not on large jobs either.
Last spring I cruised 320 acres for your
friend and supporter, Sparreton of Bonanza
for $16.00 or 5c per acre when Cullison
and his men were then in the county.
. I also made $304.00 net in ten days on
a cruising contract in Siskiyou county, Calif
ornia when the contract price was 10c per
acre, losing time going to and from the
job, and furnishing barometer contour maps
and considerable more reliable information
than Edgar and Cullison ever did, or ever
will, furnish.
Of course, ten cents per acre will not
subsidize the press, nor hire lawyers and
Tom-Toms.
I am an independent cruiser and have
made cruises where the buyer and seller
of the tract in question bated their price
per thousand on my estimates without call
ing in a cruiser to check me.
In competition with Edgar and Cullison
I submitted a written bid to the County
Court to cruise 100,000 acres or more of
timber double run, at a price of 8c per
acre, agreeing to furnish maps of the land
cruised. This was the only 8c per acre bid
filed for the job, which was let to Cullison
at 16c per acre.
I have taken no part in political contro
versies and have not been employed by
either the Weyerhaeuser Timber company
or by Richard H. Hovey as a cruiser.
x For tho protection of my good name,
which I have earned in the 36 years I have
lived in this county, I want to state pub
licly that anyone that claim my bid for
cruising Klamath county at a price of 8c
per acre was a bid made for the timbermen
is either a fool or a liar.
