' Despite the fact that summer is over, fire hazard is as serious today as during the hottest days of July and August. Serious conflagrations are burning uncontrolled in various sections of Oregon and California. Assuming that deer hunters, as a class, are true - sportsmen and usually careful in the woods, the Evening Herald makes a personal appeal to all nimrods to ex ercise particular caution in disposing of matches, cigar ettes, and in extinguishing camp fires. The state showed its consideration for hunters by quickly lifting the deer hunting ban immediately after state-wide showers September 11 and 12. Now that the forests are again tinder dry and the forest fire men ace again imminent, wouldn't it be fair for hunters to reciprocate and show the same brand of consideration and cooperation they received from the state? loncr for the entire comity and ,,,., and' dliiln room are.lhe up-to-date .l--rl.ul mini p. . .... .,... ,, . ,.. SIB jCUmath Ave. At The Liberty At The Pine Tree 2 A New Deal T ever a class of men deserved the good fortune they are now enjoying, it is livestock men. - Shortly after the war, the market dropped like a plummet, and for six or seven years remained at sacri fice price levels. It finally reached the point where wiseacres were announcing to the world that the United States was no longer a meat eating nation. And then came a new deal. Cattle revived, the price began to rise and is now at a high point guaran teeing operators a substantial profjt. dl By the very nature of the industry, cattle raising wuleroes the longest periods or depression loiiowed Dy the longest periods of stability. After the terrible year of. 1921, the market sank U the bottom of the well. Thereupon ensued black years. Many livestock men sold ' everything they had for what ever price they could get and bought sheep or banked the proceeds. Eventually the time came when there was no sur plus to dump on the market, and when that day dawned, the cattle market price displayed signs of strength. The men who stood "by their guns" are reaping the profits today. - The encouraging outlook of the cattle market is that it will probably remain at a steady and high level for several years to come. Why? Because it would take from four to five years to bring livestock back to the overproduction era of 1921. the mark owing to his nervous ness.
