Two Problems j
Appalling crimes committed on the so-called "murder j
farm" of California again shock the civilized world.
Five youths were lured to the farm by a 15-year-old boy,
a !boy with a perverted twist to hi brain. What occur- J
red thereafter is too revolting to print in the public press j
suffice to say the youths suffered untold tortures and I
were finally murdered when, at long last, the young j
beast's innate craving for sadistic abuse was satisfied. !
Once again, unspeakably brutal crimes bring thinking j
people to consideration of two important problems: !
(1) Are detailed and grewsome newspaper accounts !
of iuch crimes of perversion and insanity partially to j
blame for recurring offenses, in that they produce an i
unsound and undesirable effect on impressionable and j
abnormal minds? ' '
(2) What steps shall be taken to tighten the bands of j
law, to free justice from the fetters of technicalities, to j
accelerate society's punishment of the convicted, and, in i
short, to impress on that class which might become crim- j
inaJ, that it simply does not pay?
jThe Murder Farm" atrocities find a possible source
in Jjewspaper treatment of the Hickman case. Relatives j
oflithe moronic boy admit he was unduly fascinated by
th Hickman case and that he talked of little else during
itsWogress. Other cases involving kidnaping and muti- '
