for his honesty, courage and ability, its position in advo
cating the candidacy of Herbert Hoover, is not changed
as the result of Smith's keynote speech yesterday. We
admit that there was a liberal and progressive note to
some sections of the acceptance address, but here and
there were gaping holes of misjudgment and misstate
ment! We are not numbered'among those whq hoid 'up' pro
hibition as an ideal institution. .It's faults are' manifest
on every side and either there will be .some correction
of the law or the wrong will right itself ns the nation
begins to realize benefits of the law. .
Al Smith has flayed prohibition as being the' cause of
corruption, disrespect of law, bootlegging, Vum running,
and, in general, a force insidiously undermining the foun
dations on which this nation stands. He has arrayed an

bears some color of truth. -
But, when all. is said and done, what is Mr. Smith's
solution to the problem? Simply this: that each of the
48 states be empowered to dispense liquors if they so
choose.
If the present status of prohibition is bad, its status
under Mr. Smith's plan would be ten times worse. Vis
ualize' California, wet; Oregon, Dry; Washington, wet;
Idaho, dry; Montana, wet; Nevada, dry. What would be
the result? Why, the very abuses that the democratic
nominee proclaims to the world, would be multiplied ten
fold. Instead of two borders over which to smuggle liq
uor tho Canadian and the Mexican there . would be
dozens. tUim running from a wet state into a flry would
