AUTHOR TELLS
OF YOUNG GIRL
(Continued froia page I)
men told me today of ber
death.
NBW YORK, July 21. (AP) :
Despondency over ber failure at
a literary career waa the motive
accepted by police today for tho .
apparent suicide of Mis Virginia
Drew, literary protege of Maxwell
Bodenbeim, poet and author. i
Mlsa Drew' body wa found
floating in the Hudson river
Thursday afternoon, libe wa
last seen leaving Bodenhelm's
apartment early Monday. . i
The girl's relatives, however,
are unsatisfied with the police
theory and the explanation ad
vanced by an artist friend that
Misa Drew killed herself In .car
rying out a suicide pact wllh" a
"prominent noval-ist" who be
lieved with her In reincarnation.
They believe ahe was thrown into
the river to drown.
The friend. Miss Caroline No
voiny, told police Mlsa Drew
telephoned her last week ' and
said that tha prominent novelist,
whose name she did not divulge,
had ''cut -her to the heart", with i
his criticism of her work. "JMUisj
Dre.w then told me," Mlsa Novot-'
ny suld. "that he, too, was a be-
llever in reincarnation and that
they had made a suicide pact."
RELEASE JOHN
MEEK SUSPECT
(Continued from page One)
formed that tbo man probably
waa the Klamath Falls fugitive.
Meek has been sought since
last December when Johnnie An
sll waa slain In a store robbery.
Anstl, an old and trusted em
ploye ot the Klamath Gun Store,
was murdered about 7 a. m. on
the morning of the last day ot
1927. His body waa discovered
a halt hour later by a customer.
The gun from which the fatal
bullet emitted, was of a queer
type, and It was this clue which
finally led officials to suspect
Meek, a recluse and logger "re
siding near. Odossa op upper
Klamath lake. . '
Meek apparently learned that
officers were after him for on
an Instant's notice he deserted
his lonely cabin and fled to the
south In a small car.
At Redding he left hla machine
In a garage where It still re
mainsand with the remark that
ho waa going to catch a south
bound trnln, left the garage.
That waa the last seen of the
suspected man. ' Numerous tips
havo been run down but nothing
definite hun resulted. Ono such
chase wrh concentrated In north
ern , California, . whore the man
was nolle vod to be hiding. '
