Aviation As A Vocation
A young man 'planning to take'up aviation as"aro
fession would do well to heed the most recent bulletin of
the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of
Aeronautics.
This organization ' recently questioned leading air
w transport companies about new pilots. The majority of
the replies received stated that experience has shown
that the best pilots come from the regular army and navy
Hying schools. Commercial air schools, it was said, do
not quite offer pilots the variety of experience needed to
make first-class flyers. ; , V . j
1 It was added, however, that- as -aviation grow tht
commercial schools Undoubtedly will increase in 'effect
iveness. " One interesting comment was that barnstorming
by the . individual ' pilot after, graduation from flying

murdered all the settlers In the
Tule Lake vicinity. We first got
the news from some friendly In
diana who had come direct from
the battle grounds of the day be
fore. We hastened to put- up a
stockade fort for our defense. In
the meantime Captain O. C. Ap
plegate came past onr little fort
with about 20 Indian-soldiers and
stayed -over night with us. Next
morning be moved -on toward the
scene of depredations. On his way
over he came In contact -with the
Modoc murderers, evidently on
their way over to kill ua if they
could. Captain Applegate un
doubtedly saved the day for us.
I could make a long-time atory
of this but .my space Is limited.
Suffice to say. we were forced to
stay aix months In our fort, for
it was 40 mites to the nearest
place of real safety, and danger
ous to leave our fort very tar. I
and one or two other young men
(who are dead now) stood guard
from November till May, under
arma day- and night. My mother
and father and the children nd
my young wife bad to be pt dtect
ed. Meantime my first baby
was born In that fort, while Gen
eral Crook was shelling the Mo
docs. Sbe was the first white
baby born in that country. I
