southern state.
First definite word that the
Southern Pacific has begun sur

would serve. It la believed, as a
barrier to an encroaching north

with the return of Earl Shepherd
and Andrew Collier, local busi

the region where the S. P. is

The survey runs In the gen

ter of a railroad fight now being
waged In California with the
Southern Pacific opposing the
plan of the Western Pacific to
construct a line from Westwood

. Considerable excitement is ap

the survey, the local men report

would give the 8. P. excellent
advantage In building up the Pitt
river, through a rich timber re

possible view toward extension

Reason for the Bartle-Lookout
line Is found In the fact that It

With the completion of the
proposed railroad bridge over
Sulsun bay In the 8an Francisco
region, a Southern. Pacific pro
ject which will cost more than
$10,000,000, nearly an hour will
be cut from the Portland-San
Francisco schedule of the crack
Cascade limited.
. This la according to A. S.
Itosenbaum, southern Oregon
representative of the Southern
Pacific, who received formal an
nouncement of the costly new
Viaduct Tuesday.
The bridge, which Is' to be
slightly more than a mile In
lungth, will allow the Southern
Pacific to abandon Its train ferry
stoamers and the ferry slips at
Porta Costa and Benlcla, thus
giving a more dignified approach
by rail to San Francisco.
In addition to speeding up pas
aenger schedules, freight time
will be cut from two to tour
hours between Portlund and the
bay region aa a result of the
bridge, Boaenbaum stated. Two
year will be required to com
plete the project.
