te of a railroad to the units,
livelier competition for these
units is anticipated.
; Another reason for the under
taking a reason not officially
mentioned Is the fact that var
ious private holdings in eastern
Klamath and western Lake coun
ty will soon be cut and shipped
to mills to manufacture. Fire
hazard, the heavy toll from pine
beetle aiid the rapid ripening of
timber Is rapidly making this
move imperative. . These Inter
ests are anxious to secure a rail-
toad to tap their holdings and ;
the Joint owners of the u. c.

to supply that service.
- The reconstruction of the 40
mile line Into Klamath will be
project more comprehensive
than is generally believed. Prob
ably new rails will be laid: cer
Uln curve may be straightened
Out; and, of course, there will
be usual re ballasting and resur
facing. y However, the major project
of all In connection with this line
is the probable tunneling of the J
range of hills separating the
Klamath basin from gprague river
valley. This low range is in
Tonna valley. To ret over the
hill at this time it is necessary
to awitch back, and to haul
heavy log trains over the hill
la expensive from the standpoint
of equipment and fuel.

Since the war a number of fur
ther additions to the system have
been completed. In Montana a
line has been extended from
jBalnville to Scobey and another
is under construction from Saco
on the main line, north and west
to Turner, 78 miles away. Both
of these open up large grain
growing and slock raising areas
to railroad transportation. In
Washington a new seven and
three-quarter mile tunnel is being
structed to reolace the oresent
Cascade Tunnel, which is two and
fiveeighths miles long. When
completed this will be the longest
railway tunnel on the Western
Hemisphere. It will lower the
summit crossing through he Cas
cades 500 feet, eliminate 2000
degrees of Curvature and seven
miles of line and make possible a
shortening in the running time of
trains. In conjunction with the
tunnel project a plan of electrifi
cation is being carried out which,
when completed, will extend from
Wenjtcbee to the coast. '

Shorter Route to
Eastern Points
Chicago and the northern tier
of states are closer to Klamath
by reuson of the construction of
the Great Northern extension
from Ileud south to Klamath
Falls.
Great Northern officials point
out that the tlend, Deschutes riv
er route will be a taster and
more direct route to the east.
Likewise, It was pointed out,
San Francisco and points south
are closer to residents ot the
northern tier of statea by reason
of the new conartuctlon. To
reach California via the Great
Northern to Klamath Falls and
then connecting with the South
ern Pacific at the latter point.
Is shorter and taster than to go
the roundabout Portland route.

DREAMS
COME TR UE
For twenty-eight years this store has been in' business in
Klamath Falls. For twenty-eight years we have had Visions
and dreams of great railroad development in this section, that
have now come true. . . '
With the coming of the Southern Pacific railroad and the
development that has followed and with the coming of the
Great Northern railroad, Klamath Falls and all Southern Ore
gon will enjoy greater prosperity and.be a better place in
which to live.
' The fact that these two great railroad systems have ex- .
tended their lines to Klamath Falls is evidence of the impor
tance of the Klamath country as a lumber, agricultural, indus
trial and scenic center, and greater growth and prosperity
will follow.
tWe . congratulate Klamath Falls and Southern Oregon on,,,
the entrance of the Great Northern railroad to our Empire
Awakening. . ' ' " -
