Lincoln's Deathbed Doctor Still Lives;
Keeps Curtain Drawn On His Memories
. NEW YOrtK. April J Sixty
three years now have passed
since that night In April, 1S65.
when Abraham Lincoln died from
the hulls of John Wilkea Booth.
Of persons who were friends
of the great man, there are left
but a handful. Pew there are,
even, who can boast they ever
saw him. The last of his chil
dren. Robert Todd Lincoln, died
In 192S.
But Dr. Chnrles A. Lenin, the
first doctor to reach Lincoln af
tor he waa wounded and who
watched over the president until
the end came, still lives In New
York. He is 86. Though he has
retired from active medical prac
tice, he is lu good health and
serves on various hospital boards.
A t'nrtain Shield His
Memories.
Dr. Leale was 2S, out of medi
cal school for only a year, when
hn attended the dying Lincoln.
He had Joined the medical corns
of the army, and waa in charge
of a ward for wouuded officers
iu the U. S. General Hospital at
Armory Square, Washington,
when the assassination of the
president occurred.
Mrs. Lincoln placed Dr. Leale
in charge of tho treatment of
the wounded president. But medi
cal aid could do nothing save
prolong Lincoln's life for a few
short hours. It was the night ot
April 14 that he was shot; the
next morning he was dead.
Of those historic days Dr.
Leale has a store of priceless
memories. But he dislikes to go
back over them. He prefers to
look to the future, and to thluk
and talk of the happenings and
projects of today that Interest

he holds, than retroepectloa.
Robert Todd Lincoln, the Eman-
cipators son. was
like
that,
Through the years of his retire-
ment he refused consistently to
to talk in reminiscent vein of
his father. Near tho end ot his
career he became virtually a re-
close In the little New England
town where he lived.
Dr. Leale resides In New York
with his daughter. He has a son
In New York who is a doctor, and
another who is an attorney.
Won Prominence as
Physician.
When he was mustered out of
the army in 1866. Dr. Leale went
at the Klamath General hospital.
This is the first child born to
Mr. and Mrs. Miller.
