Wednesday, March 7, 1928 j, e-, , , Tlte Old Home Town 'V Go where you will ; see what you may, and when you return to Klamath Falls you must have the same feeling that many of ua do namely, that the old home town is nard to beat Every southern city is crowded with all lines of business; every community is filled with people looking for a change ; every train is loaded with Americans going some place to look things over with a view of locating, v Discontent hovers in every locality, Overdone busi ness conditions constitute the rule rather than the excep tion. All up and down the California coast there is a cry for a change. If we had one person we had two hundred cross-question tis on Klamath Falls, for they had heard Of this city. . ' i ' V Our answer invariably was that Klamath Falls is the fastest-growing town in the west; that she will double in b'ueinesa and in populaion within the next five years, but vk urged them not to come unless they had money to buy out an established business, and we warded the man who works with Tiis hands to be sure of himself before be en tered tha Klamath basin, for we have sufficient man power here now for present undertakings. Taking everything into consideration, this thought must sink into, every citizen, if he will but make a trip south Klamath Falls and Klamath basin have a greater constructive future immediately', ahead than any other locality on this coast This includes the cifies, for in the cities the multitude is such that many consider every op portunity, whereas in a smaller community like' Klamath such a condition does not exist Our growth here is as sured and it will be a healthy growth. -Oik: word about vision: Most of-us are too modest lit our vision. We fail to see our -community's future be cause we are standing so closely up against the picture. Take a trip down below and see what others are doing, then come home and realize what can and will be done here in the next few years. --Andrew J. Volstead, writing to the Women's Chris tian Temperance" Union, reveals that the famous "one half pf one per cent" as the dividing line, between intox icating and non-intoxicating drinks, was fixed, not by prohibition workers, but by the brewers themselves. " . I Before prohibition, he says, the' brewers: who were compelled to pay a license took the matter up with the treasury department and suggested that all beer contain ing one-half of one per cent of alcohol should be treated as intoxicating. .This was done, and thus a standard aft-eady existed when the prohibition law came into effect , ' " " ' It is rather humorous that this standard should have bejen fixed by the brewers themselves. But somehow jt isii't "surprising. Throughout the long fight for prohibi tion, the Anti-Saloon league's best ally was the liquor trde; by its bling, selfish excesses it did more to hasten Hi own downfall than all of its enemies put together. HACK FROM Oil. TO t"OAI. New Oeam Tribune:, Tho brief announcement that the hipping board freighter Mercet had completed Its teat-run from Amsterdam to New York in two days Inst than scheduled may possibly, hi the absence of de tailed report, fore-shadow a ro tnrn to coal In place of oil aa a marine fuel a revolution which would-be more important- to shipping than turning from coal to olbvwaa. - The fiercer is the first vessel of commercial slso to be fitted with apparatus for burning pul verised coal. Experiments have tended to ' show that ' this fuel Would prove more . economical than oil. or coal as formerly uaed. A cheaper type of coal may be utilised, it is claimed, and the heat efficiency for equ,al amounts of coal by weight Is greatly Increased. The new apparatus, further more. Is said to offer the same advantages as oil In operation, the coal being pulverised aboard the ship and fed to the fires through burners somewhat simi lar to oil burners. The Mercer made short testa nearly two months ago. before ISO shipping v men. At that time it was said that their en thusiasm' Radicated rhat a satis factory teat run between Am sterdam -and New- York would probably Induce .tbe installation of the new equipment on other .XZj?5i ,T-yZ-SL. r Mi t . First the auto makers launched a price war, with the result that all of us found luxurious, capable cars offered for sale at unheard-of prices. Beauties Two i Yelling "Unthinkable". - There is nothing so valuable in international relations as the ability to look at things with unemotional realism, realism. , . ' - When Admiral Plunkett made his famous remarks about tho likelihood of a war between the United States and England he was greeted by a perfect chorus of disap proving criticism. Many reams of 'good paper were ruined to set forth the thesis that war with England is "unthinkable." i ; ' Probably it is. But wouldn't it be a good idea to sit down and study the situation at some length, coldly and dispassionately; and then, if such a study shows that there are possibilities of future conflict, to devise ways and means of remedying the situation? - Wouldn't that be more effecive than yelling "unthinkable" without stop ping to investigate?
