Opening an Empire
The Oregon Public Service commliwion is familiar
to a certain extent with the Klatnath Buain, but we
iloubt whether that body has ever given the study
to the benefit! of all Western Oregon which would
follow the Modoc Northern construction, that it has
to other projects which are wholly withia the bord
ers of this elate. .
That is the .solution the Evening Herald chooses
to make cf the commission's action in pushing1 the
cro.'is-Htate mi I road project from Odell to Crane,
rather than lining up vigorously behind the. rail-
road already started from. Klamath Falls to Alturas,
California. - - ' '
We believe Mr. Corey of the state commission be
lieves in forcing the building of .both railroads im
" mediately. That sounds all right and were it pos
sible to do so everyone might agree to. such a pro
gram ;that is everyone who does r.ot own &n inter
est in the railroads. But we etill.beliecr that rail
road building must be dine with a keen sene of
capital investment and thtre must be 1 cal tonraffe
to justify railroad construction.
The local tonnage on the Modoc Northern is a
certainty. Much of the country is already develop-,
cd. The Tula Lake section and-the MerrilUand Malin
country are the best improved agricultural sections
in the United States that are not served by railroads.
The Modoc Northern will pierce the very heart of
this gteat agricultural section. This together with
the vast forests along the ;Modoc Northern railroad
will insure a paying operation from the day it is
completed, from a local tonnage standpoint. -
Added to this is the great benefit to allWestern
Oregon in shipping freight eastward, for it will all
come to Eugene then to Klamath Falls and out to
Ogden with no mountain; ranges of difficulty to
negotiate. j "
The place for Klamath-Basin to work is before
the state commission, if given an opportunity; and
later before the Interstate Commerce Commission
'at its hearing in Portland.
