' Among. the host of names that have been "officially" used to designate this college, only one Is actually "legal," says E. E. Wilson, Ccrvallis attorney and regent of the college for many '.years.' Regent Wilson says that the only law specifying any name Is the one of 18S5 which created the board of regents. Jhis said the board "shall be denominated the boaTd of regents of the state agricultural college ot the state of Oregon." - Other old-timers here Including Dr. John Fulton. '92 graduate and Frederick Berehtold, pion eer faculty member, agree that in the early days the common name was "State Agricultural college." . or "S. A. C." The term Oregon Agricultural col lege was seldom or never heard, they say, .until students drop ped "8. A. C." and started using O. A. C. in the first football . yell, "composed" In 1893. x Library files shows, that var ious and sundry names were used both in old laws relating to the college and in catalogs and Teports Issued since 1885 when the institution was taken over by the state. In addition to those already mentioned were "Corvallls State Agricultural col lege," "State Agricultural Col lego of Oregon." "Oregon State Agricultural college." The nine word name used in 1SS5 law Is still found on college checks. Mr. Wilson pointed out that regardless of the name used, agri cultural service to !h state has been steadily on the Increase and Is greater now than ever, even though the great majjri'y of students arc attracted to ot it er courses asslgnl-d to the col lege.
