endurance by traveling 25,000
miles in less than 25.000 min-t
utea at the Atlantic City speed
way In official tests early in No-1
vember. '
This is the statement of Ed
Dunham, local Studebaker deal
er, who discussed the Command
er's sweeping victories recently.
"There are many conspicuous
features of the record-breaking
performances of tho Command
er," said Mr. Dunham. "In the
first place no automobile. In tact
i no man-made machine, has ever
gone so far so fast before. Every
1 official stock car record for en
durance Bud speed, regardless of
price or power, is now held by
the Commander. That an auto
mobile, could maintain an aver
age speed of 65.31 miles an hour
for 25,000 consecutive miles,
stops for oil, gas. water and
change of drivers included, is the
greatest automotive achievement
of history.
"The Commanders that have
mado these official records were
powered with the Studebaker Big
Six engine. This power plant Is
technically known as a medium
speed engine. Many other manu
facturers use high-speed motors.
At a speed of 60 miles an hour
the Commander cranVshnft turns
2200 times a mintito. At 60 miles
an hour the high-speed engine
has a crankshnft speed ranging
up to 3600 revolutions per min
ute. "In tho difference In engine
.-pood lies the supremacy of the
Commnnder. Let us assume that
the average competitive engine
has a crankshaft speed of 1000
revolutions per minute more than
that of the Commander. It Is
plain to be seen that the extra
1000 revolutions-per minute will
definitely shorten the lifo of the
motor, v -V '
