It Is the only source nf Ihe rarest and mnnt costly fur In tho world, , How those animals were trapped and brought to Ihe Pacific Const In a stirring story. Oregon has one cit the. only two herds In captivity. The complete .tory ' will gladfy be sent to any Interested person who will write to the Ile.il South American "Chinchilla Knr Farms, Inc., Portland. An American mining engineer in Chile learned from the natives about the elusive Chinchilla and its high fur value. Forsceing a fortune if this rare species could Le propogated in captivity ho employed experienced Andean trappers to hunt them. After six years ef patient effort he was able to get twelve of them to sea level and into Cali fornia. The first story of this feat appeared in the Scientific American in December, 1925. Newspapers, magazines and trade papers have retold the story. . We have reprinted the story at length for free distribution, a copy of which is available to any one who .is interested Practically Extinct Foxes and trappers have almost wiped out the Chin chilla and have driven the remainder into high altitudes. The Chinchilla roams at night and leaves no trail or scent. A hunter is therefore lucky who can trap one to three a year. Their scarcity and the superlative beauty of their fur is what makes their pelts so valuable. The present market is around ?100 to $250 for a skin about 8x13 inches in size. Hardy Prolific Easy to Raise That these tiny animals could endure' the changes o'f elevation, climate, temperature, food and living conditions involved in bringing them from the high Andes to Oregon attests their vitality and hardi ness. ' ' . ' f . ' In captivity they grow larger and sleeker than in their wild state, breed oftener and have larger lit ters. The domesticated Chinchilla breeds threo times a yeart and has one to four young in the lit ter. The young breed when three to four months old. Propagation pyramids' rapidly. Litters are born every ' month of the yeaf . The Chinchilla , is a strict vegetarian. Three of them consume no more food than one chicken and require only small and inexpensive quarters. They are cleanly and sanitary decidedly .different from , chickens, hogs, foxes or other animals. They aro subject to no known disease or parasites. Strict Regulation The above facts are given to assure you that South American Chinchilla Fur Farms, Inc., arc a serious and carefully planned enterprise. Investment in the present company, by outsiders, will be kept strictly limited and the sale of breeding stock will be kept under control. The two ranches that control the industry at this -time have adopted uniform policies upon which the industry will be conducted. This is after the method of the, African diamond mines which sus tain their market by regulation of production and control of supply. Our experience has taught us that such regulation and control of the industry at the beginning means its continuance tts a success ful business enterprise.
