-That's the kind of talk that gets aome place. That's tho
kind of proclamations that Avill make the world ait up quick
ly and wonder if Uncle Sam has finally shaken off his cloak
of optimism and is now looking things straight) in the face.
For several years this nation has been playing what
seemed to be a very foolish game is permitting other first
class powers to do as they pleased in navy building while we
sat idly by and trusted to luck, isolation and history, for pro
tection. Observers all over the coasts warned Washington, D.
C, of the mistake being made, but the "country seemed to be
so intoxicated with prosperity and material wealthllhat no
heed was paid. f,
From now on, however, there is' Something dofng and
Uncle Sam will refuse to turn the other cheek to any of the
nations who see fit to engage him in ail altercation. i vThe sur
est way to prevent any enemy country from showing its teeth
is to be prepared, and that is what thq ,new navy building
program will mean preparedness, have heard the word
before, haven't we?
