Some 500 students are being graduated from the Univer
sity of Oregon this week. Approximately the same number
.were graduated at the Oregon Agricultural college last week.
A few less than a hundred are receiving diplomas at the Wil
lamette university, half that number from Reed college, and
a proportional number from all the minor colleges all testi

The sudden -rush, of, youth .to the universities is produc

difficult for college' boys to gain their proper place in the
economic order "Many "therefore have 'to-turn their minds
arid; especially their 'muscles, to other things. Much of the
time spent at college in special training is therefore wasted
except culturally, and. even then it is detrimental because
of false premises that create discontent and dissatisfaction.

Why Do Birds Migrate?
i
This question is one that has often been asked in the
Klamath Basin whore the bird life is extensive and is there
fore often studied. . j " i
Why do birds migrate? It is a mystery een to biologists
who have devoted years of study to the phenomenon. Scien
tists have been seeking the answer for a century and .ate as
much in the dark today as before they undertook the search.
. While -htese studies, which have been fads with many nn
of science, have cleared up many misunderstandings concem-
jing bird life, not one of the students can more than guess the
j meaning of the arrival of the first robbin in the spring or tr-u

. One conclusion is that while "the entire act of migration
is so utterly complex that not a sinprl-i factor may be describ
as absolute cause, migration has arisen from movements by
seasonal and climatic changes in certain species until it has
become hereditary instinct and a part of the life cycle of the
individual."
However, this research has not been wholly fruitless.
Man's knowledge of bird life has been augmented greatly by
it. It has been found that large birds, such as loons, cranes,
ducks apd hawks migrate by day, while the majority of the
small birds, such as warblers, flycatchers and. sparrows, , fly
by night during the migratory period. The chief reason is
that the, larger do not suffer from a day of fasting while the
smaller vinged creatures must spend some of thedayligh't.
hours foraging. '
It has been learned that the arctic tern flies from the arc
tic circle to the antarctic circle and back in every twelve
month, and that the migratory speed of flying of ducks and
(Wild geese ranges from 42 to 59 miles an hour and of smaller
birds from 20 to 37 miles an hour.
Another thing this study of migration has taught man is
that he has not yet conquered the air.
