I T." ."Operating Costs Force Change
j -s-r...s!n ,
i In order that two daily newspapers may continue to
serve Klamath Falls in the future as in the past a change
lias been effected whereby both the Evening Herald and
Klamath News will be under more or less of a com-
i User plan as to physical plant and administration.
fi'his was accomplished by the owner of the Herald anl
the owners of the News working out a feasable plan of
bperation which, while working to the end of less expense
in operation, does not affect the policies or the competitive
features of either newspaper. Each will continue to
serve its respective field as heretofore and each has a
field to serve. ,
. Constant demands for greater service, he high prico
of everything used in making a newspaper, including labor,
positively forces newspapers all over the country in the
small cities to either merge completely into one publication
or adopt what has been adopted in Klamath Falls, common
user of equipment and co-operation in as many ways as
are consistent under such a plan.
- ; This city is in its growing stages and needs both a
morning and evening newspaper, and it is with the thought
of continued service of this najure, yet at the same time
adopting economy in operation, that has brought about
the change. . .; .
Limiting Truck Loads .
" '
. Oregon's supreme court has just held legal the law
relating to loads that trucks are permitted to haul over
state highways.
t-"' It is pleasing to note that the highest tribunal has
Jttled this question once and. for -. all .time ..to come.
People who tax . themselves' most liberally through auto-
. mobile license and gasoline do not cherish the sight of an
Overloaded truck ploughing up a highway. The over
loaded vehicle has done more to cause expensive repairs
to xoads in Oregon than all other causes combined.
"wOn the one hand the man who has extremely heavy
loads to haul may think he is injured when not permitted
to use the roads as he sees fit, but he has another guess
, coming, for the people as a whole pay, for the roads, or a
better way to put it,' the automobile owners and users pay
for the roads. This being true why should endless ex-
. pense be incurred because a very few have heavy ' traffic
which tears up a highway?
Oregon's roads are her pride. She has the best
system of any of the states. Failure to keep those roads
show worse than had the roads never been built, and to
keep them up properly heavy loads must be excluded from
using them.
Pleased With What They Saw
S
Portland business and professional people who visited
Klamath Monday saw enough to convince them of several
things, but the one that chiefly was agreed upon that
Klamath Falls is to be an interior city to be reckoned with.
They were unanimous in their belief that this hvg
territory will produce a great volume of business that
Portland must fight for; that San Francisco's long en
trenchment in this field will not be moved easily, nor will
it be moved at all unlets extraordinary service, high
qualities of merchandise and sound financial relations ars
established in the Klamath Basin.
'. This country was an oasis to the Portland crowd, for
it offered virgin wealth to be seen with the naked eye.
If offered to them an outlet for business, an extension of
volume which every city so richly desires.
. The treatment accorded the visitors was most hospit
fcble and was appreciated by them. The Evening Herald
sincerely hopes they will come often and each time we
promise that we will show them something new and of
extreme interest to them.
Los Angeles has begun killing bank bandits. Port
land could well declare an open ueason on the hold-up
men. Yet, if Portland did do such a thing some of her
sob sisters would parade the streets to enlist sympathy
for the poor persecuted desperdoes. ,
v ,The criminals' union in Portland seems ' to have a
strong foothold.
...Anyway, with railroads building and saw mills buzz
ing the farm still looks mighty good to a lot of us for that
is the background and bulwark of it all. Work for land
settlement ' -
With the Oregon Trunk buying more property in the
city the building from Paunina to Bend is expected lo
begin soon, for otherwise the Northern lines would have
little use for Klamath Falls real estate. '
