When the little blue-winged teal first
took tho water on tho Missouri river
ages ago. It began navigation history
on tho "Rig Muddy" that soon Is
to see another step in Its evolution.
The Indian with his canoe, the
half civilised voyager with his piro
gue, the fur trader with his keel
boat and the "dingey" or little
steamboat with a single boiler and
engine, successively tolled up and
down the treacherous river, each
marking a step forward In navi
gation. The magaiticent steamboat ot the
'SO'a, that great floating palace that
marked the heydcy of stcamboatlng
on the Missouri, held t?ay for a
decade or more and with its passing
river traffic halted. Now Is to
come the power boat and string of
freight laden barges. Tala modern

provement program extending over
five years, whereby approximately
12,000,000 will be spent the first
year between Kansas City ud St.
Louis.
The first attempt to navigate the
Missouri by steam was made in
1819. It was a haiardous under
taking. Besides the danger ot the
river, which needed the most skill
ful navigation because ot anags,
sandbars and tortuous channels,
there was the danger of the lurking
savage, concealed in the grass along
the river banks ready to open tire
on the boatmen without warning.
The Western Engineer, a small
steamboat 75 feet long, was tbe first
to ascend the river aa far as Coun
cil Bluffs, which it reached Sept.
17, 1819. It was built expressly
to awe the Indian. On the bow.
running from the keelson forward,
was a large steam escape pipe, made
In imitation of a serpent. The pipe
was painted black and the mouth
of it red, and clouds ot steam bel
ched forth as the little ship crawled
upstream at -the rate of three miles
an hour.
Tbe first steamboat to ascend the
river above Council Bluffs was the
Yellowstone of the American Fur
company, which left St. Louis April
It, 1832, and reached tbe mouth of
the Bad river in South Dakota, on
June 19. The following year the
Yellowstone ascended to the mouth
of the Yellowstone river, thus de
monstrating the claim long made
by army engineers that the Missouri
was navigable that far.
Traffic on the "Big Muddy" flour
ished after 1830 and 'was at its
height between 1850 and 1860.
Lines ot noble boats plied the stream
making possible the military and
trading posts of the ever extending
frontier.

One morning, noarly 25 years ago,
I.oa Angeles motorists awoko to find
that an automobile filling station or
what Is now known as a service sta
tion had been provided by tho Un
ion OH company of California.
The station, which was tue pro
genitor of the present Immense chain
of servlco stations, was located at
Sixth and Mnti'0 streets, Los An
geles. From the motorist's point ot view
tho new facilities were pleasingly
surprising, for it wus now possible
to secure gas and oil requirements
with a minimum ot inconvenience.
Ho manifested his approval of the
change by his patronage, and In re
sponse, the I'nion Oil company ex
tended Its facilities, until today its'
red and gray servlco stations are
to be found in practically every com
munity and along every principal
highway in the Pacific coast states.

rib resulting from a fall yesterday
while he was inspecting the flax

berries, raspberries, loguns and cur

the market building and overflowed

Buyers refused to tuke hold and
prlves dropped to a level maintained
by the cannery guarantee. Hireling
concerns and canneries are taklug ull
tho frutt they can get ut 10 H cents
a pound with crates und bullocks
furnished.. This means a prleu ot
approximately 83.15 a cruto to tho
grower, with less time, und trouble
in tho picking.
When prices on strawberries had
reached 83 a cruto tho growers re
fused to sell and many loads vcre
taken to tho canneries and Juice
plants after tho early session.
Raspberry receipts wero tho heav
iest so far this season and tho mar
ked broke fully II a crate. A few
early sales were mado at $3 to 83.25
but tho bulk of tho fruit went at
82.75 to 83 with load lots as low as
82.50 a crato. i
Logans wero hard to move and
lots were cleaned up at 82 to 82.25
a crate. The loganberry crop la com
ing on heavy and picking will be
in full swing this week.
Offerings ot currants wero limited
but thero was little demand. Best
crates went at 82.50. A half crate of
blackcaps brought 82.
