Missing at sea for 130 days, the prey of alternate storms and calms, the
four-masted schooner Irene finally made Its way to San Pedro, Calif.,
after being given up as lost. The schooner sailed from Grays Harbor,
Wash., Dec. H for Miami, Fla., with a load of lumber, but was driven
far off its course. There were rations for only about one more day when
It finally reached the harbor. But the crew's first cry was, "Give us
a smoke." Upper picture shows the schooner in San Pedro harbor: be
low are Captain and Mrs. Allen E. Rosendal and Irene, the mascot.

"Play Ball."
With these two words, the open
ing Same of the Southern Oregon
baseball League will start off with
a bang on fair grounds field Sun
day at 2:30 p. m. when the Klam
ath Falls Pelicans meet Grants Pass.
Enthusiasm in tho national sport
has been growing as the date of the
opening game draws near. The
Pelicans each afternoon are putting
forth every effort to round into
shape for. the Initial game. Word
jfrom Grants Pass Is to the effect
that the Rogue River aggregation
i will' bring over a fast team with a
battery that will be hard, to beat.
, Who will start In the box for
the Pelicans Is a matter of specu
lation. Even Rip King, beefy man
ager and catcher for Klamath Falls,
hasn't decided who will toss for
Klamath. Nor has he decided Just
what tho line-up will be. .
It Is believed however that Aiken
will hold down first. Fuller second,
Duback short, Bsyness third, and
King catcher. Leading candidates
tor the outfield are Ed Clark, De
Maurals, 'Noel Davidson . and Cor
nell. The game will be enlivened by
ten prizes offered by Klamath Falls
merchants as follows:

hit, a 25 pound sack of flour or
three pound can of coffe; first run,
choice of a bat; for the first hit
that scores the first run, baseball

cut; for the pitcher getting the first
strike-out, straw hat; for the player
