This is no new suggestion. '. It is centuries old, and it arises logically and from obvious causes, j - The Old Testament, as now used, is heavy with details that 'were local in time and place, which time and place are so far away as to be valuable now principally for the light they throw upon the development of the idea of God in the mind cf man. ;A,very great part of the Old Testament is dun to the uncer- standing oLthe young and to the average adult, reader, because ,-of lack of light on conditions that surrounded the production of the Book. This heaviness and dimness discourages most young 'people who otherwise might take pleasantly to Bible stady. " It is not to be denied that many Old Testament writers, using the bald language of their day and of the Orient, wrote things not now mentioned in public mixed audiences. There are not a few narratives that should not be read aloud in church or in the (family circle. Matter of this kind should not be in the Bibles we 'put into the hands of children and youth. Even so great an evan gelist as John Wesley declared that there are Psalms which should not be read in public or private worship Psalms that exhibit a spirit of revenge or that conceive of God as a vengeful - Being. ' ' r, ? As history or as sidelight upon history, as source material for the study of the character and work of God, everything in the Bible is valuable and should not be the book we use an 'study daily, iour children may profitably be a shorter, clearer book. No such objections hold in any degree against the text of the New Test ament Portland Telegram. - cAt The Tine Tree ( To Ramon rN6varro fell the lot of bringing to the screen the first U. S. Naval Academy midshipman in picture history. . And he does it remarkably -well in '''The . Midship man," tho ' pieturization of Carey Wilson's story which opened yester day at the Pine Tree theater. - This practically exemplifies the choice of the Navy . But for the reasons given the Old Testament we teach mentally and morally symbolical of the numerous heroes that hare em anated from the U. S. Naval Acada my. Though the deeds involved in the story , are very modern in their heroism and .perhaps not as glam orous as those of the Navy's Paul Joneses, Novarro makes tho enter tainment of "The Midshipman" juBt as enthralling as any tierce battle at sea. . . .. , ..... Under the direction of Christy Cabanne, himself a former student of the Annapolis. Nautical College, Novarro tempers humor with dig nity end drama with flniihcd pan tomimic ability. At no time is ho Inclined to be theatrical in his -effects., Ono soes him as one would In talking to a brother or son who happens to be a naval student and had encountered all the adventures that befell the James Randall--of Novarro's portrayal.
