ers at Tientsin, when nil train was
bombed at I.angfang.
Hsu was at one time private sec
retary to Tuan Chi-Jui. the present
chief executive. He was prominent
in Peking in 1M7-1S during the
armed struggle between t'h'ihii mil
itary leaders and the Anfu club and
was in chief command of the Anfu
northwest frontier army. He took
refuge in the Jupanese legation here
after the Anfu defeat. In October.
1922. he was Implicated in a re
volt against the. Tuehun tmlliiarv
government ) of Fukien province.
Lit Chien-Chang, father of Hsu's
assassin, had been appointed special
commissioner to the southern pro
vinces when Hsu shot him, and was
generally declared to have been the
victim of a political intrigue.
His murder at Tientsin created
widespread indignation, but Hsu's
political influence protected him an'I
kept him for two years longer at his
post In command of the northwest
defense forces.
