Statue In His Front Yard
GREENVILLE, South Carolina. Dec. 10. A. P. I Kobert
(Jnillcn, noted newspaper paragrapher and humorist, has erect
ed a monument in the front yard of his home at Fountain Inn
near here, to Eve, the first woman.
'The monument which Mr. Quillen says is the first that man
kind has erected to Eve alter an estimated filXK) years of his
tory, was carved by a local marble cutter and was given this
inscription :
"In memory of Eve, the first woman."
To make the shaft harmonious in every respect, Mr. (Jnillcn
has a "nicely carved apple with a twig and lestf" placed below
the inscription, lint the neighbors "stared at (he monument with
incredulous horror," says Mr. (Jnillcn in the current issue f
his paper, the Fountain Inn Tribune.
"I'm sorry." he adds. "I never hurl anybody's feeling or offend
ed anybody's pet superstitions. This is purely a family affair.
